NEWGARDEN TO MAKE FORMULA PALMER AUDI DEBUT AT BRANDS HATCH
American standout uses break in Formula Ford schedule to race winged formula car for the first-time in Europe
KENT, ENGLAND (April 30, 2009) -- American Josef Newgarden will take another step towards his ultimate goal of racing in Formula One this weekend (May 2-3) when he contests his first "wings and slicks" race in Europe. The current MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain race winner and title contender will make a one-off appearance in the competitive Formula Palmer Audi championship, taking part in the season-opening tripleheader at the famed Brands Hatch Circuit, as part of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport event.
Newgarden, who has relocated to Oxford, England, and is contesting his first full-season of junior formula car racing in Europe, originally planned to focus solely on his Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain campaign this season. However, a gap created in the race calendar by an event postponement has opened the door for a new opportunity. Continually seeking to better himself as a driver and gain new experiences behind the wheel, the 18 year-old recently tested a Formula Palmer Audi car at the Bedford Autodrome. Newgarden Immediately came to grips with the 300-horsepower car and his backers have elected to enter him in the season-opening tripleheader at Brands Hatch. Piloting the No. 33 Robo-Pong/Racer of Tomorrow Ltd. car, Newgarden will become the first American to take part in the Formula Palmer Audi series since fellow Team USA Scholarship driver Joel Miller and Patrick Barrett got behind the wheel in the 2007 Formula Palmer Audi Autumn Trophy.
"Formula Palmer Audi is a great championship and it will be big event on a fantastic circuit," stated Newgarden. "It is a good opportunity for me to race in front of the A1GP guys and a big crowd. I would love to represent my country in A1GP at some point in the future."
Newgarden will resume his pursuit of the MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain title with Joe Tandy Racing on May 30-31, with Rounds Four, Five and Six taking place at Rockingham. Newgarden enters the second event of the Formula Ford season having won once already in his series debut, and currently sixth in the championship standings.
