Montreal, Canada, February 21, 2003 -- Fran-Am Sport has announced today in St. Petersburg, Florida that Belgian race car driver Didier Theys was named Director of the new Fran-Am Drivers Development Program.
A resident of Scottsdale, Arizona Theys, a legend in sports car racing who has also competed in the CART Champ Car Series will be responsible for helping the Fran-Am Series drivers improve their driving skills, their physical and psychological preparation, their technical knowledge of racing cars as well as their ability to talk to the medias.
"Didier Theys has been racing since 1977 and has won the U.S. Super Vee Championship and the ARS Indy Lights Championship," said Thierry Burckhart, Director of Fran-Am Sport. "Theys has also won the 24 Hours of Daytona and has contested the Le Mans endurance classic on numerous occasions. His deep knowledge of motor sport will immensely help our young drivers to reach to the top levels of racing. Didier will be their coach and will work hard at making them better race car drivers."
Fran-Am Sport is the organization that presents the North American version of the acclaimed two-litre Formula Renault -- the grass root series that has served as training ground to the career of many international drivers at the top levels of motor sport. The Fran-Am cars are spec single seaters powered by normally aspirated, two-litre engines, fitted with front and rear wings and spec Michelin slick tires.
Fran-Am Sport has a mission to provide young drivers with the opportunity to climb the ladder from karting to the top levels of motor sport without having to leave North America. Fran-Am 2000 is a very highly competitive series that offers competitors a fantastic training ground to hone their driving skills. Many famous current Formula 1 drivers began their career racing in Formula Renault worldwide, drivers such as Williams' Juan Pablo Montoya, McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen, Toyota's Olivier Panis, Jaguar's rookie driver Antonio Pizzonia and Ferrari test driver Felipe Massa.
The 13-race 2003 North American Pro Fran-Am 2000 Series will begin May 3rd on Phoenix International Raceway's road course.
