GRAY SISTERS UP TO PHILLIP ISLAND CHALLENGE IN SEPTEMBER
RACING SISTERS Lauren and Maddison Gray have answered the challenges thrown down by one of Australia's fastest circuits after a competitive month of racing at Phillip Island in Victoria.
Lauren made her debut in the Yokohama V8 Ute Racing Series - Protected by ArmorAll earlier this month driving a VE Holden Ute, whilst Maddison continued her learning curve in the cut-and-thrust world of Formula Vee racing by finishing second in the most recent round of the Victorian 1200cc championship.
In her first real taste of competition in the heavy, rear-wheel-drive Utes, Lauren acquitted herself well in the Brock Race Engineering / LGM Holden en route to a best race result of 19th, scored in race two.
Changeable weather conditions throughout the weekend made life difficult however the 22-year-old from Point Cook achieved her main goal by bringing the car home straight after the three tough races.
"It was a very tough weekend and massive learning curve," Lauren said.
"It was my first time racing a Ute and my first time in the car was on Friday practice, but despite the challenges I'm pleased with how it all worked out.
"The car requires a totally different driving style from what I am used to and the weekend was all about learning and coming out the other end with a straight car. We achieved that and I had a great time in the process.
"Everyone in the V8 Ute Series was very welcoming and made it a great experience."
Meanwhile, sister Maddison had her most competitive outing yet after finishing second in the Victorian 1200cc Formula Vee round held at the weekend.
In a 28 car field the 17-year-old qualified second in class and 21st outright, before racing to 18th in race one - just behind the class winner.
Unfortunately, things went wrong just four corners into race two when a bolt in the gear selector broke, forcing Gray out of the race and to the rear of grid for the finale'.
On a mission, she charged through to again score second in class and, despite the race two DNF, score an impressive second overall in the 1200cc class for the weekend.
"Over all it was a fantastic weekend," Maddison Gray said.
"Everything went smoothly and despite the one little hiccup in race two, there were no major dramas to worry about for our team. In the last race I started last but had some great dicing with the other cars in my class and managed to bring the car home second in class.
"With 28 cars it was a big field but that made it all the more fun. It was a great weekend and I'm really pleased."
Maddison's next challenge will be a round of the Formula Vee National Series, to be held at Mallala Raceway near Adelaide on October 29-31.
