TORONTO, ON. (November 25, 2003) 16 year-old aspiring race car star James Hinchcliffe completed a test with the Fran-Am North American Championship winning team, AIM Autosports. On November 6th, under good testing conditions at Shannonville Motorsports Park, the young Hinchcliffe turned several laps in both a Formula Ford 1600 and Fran-Am 2000 race cars.
The former karting champion , took the morning to get warmed up in the AIM Autosport Aero 2 FFord 1600 racing machine while switching to the Fran-Am 2000 car in the afternoon. "I was honored to be asked to test with such a high profile team" said Hinchcliffe. With driver coach Ugo Provencher on hand, Hinchcliffe turned some very quick laps and grabbed the attention of AIM Autosports officials. By taking the time to look at data from the on board computer system, James and his driver coach used the information to improve on racing lines and his overall comfort with the race cars.
"James adapted to the Ford 1600 car quickly as expected. He never turned a wheel wrong in the morning session" stated Keith Willis. "But in the afternoon when he got behind the wheel of the Fran-Am, he really showed his true talent. He was able to use his driving style from karting and really move around the track. He got within half a second of our fastest test lap at this track."
In the Formula Ford, Hinchcliffe turned competitive times to current AIM Autosports driver Ashley Taws. In the afternoon, Hinchcliffe and Taws switched machines and James had his turn at the much faster Fran-Am car. Hinchcliffe used the first session to get use to the race car and its unique characteristics. James prepared for the second run and was determined to tear up the track and drive the car hard during the test laps. By the end of the session, the future Canadian racer was one tenth of a second quicker than current Fran-Am Champion Andrew Ranger's fastest test lap that was completed earlier in the summer.
"The morning in the Formula Ford was fun, it was such a professionally prepared car, and it really showed" explained an excited Hinchcliffe. "The Fran-Am car exceeded all expectations as it was the fastest thing that I have ever driven. At first it was hard to drive because of the wing characteristics, it was like learning to drive again. But with a little knowledge from the right people, I was able to understand the aerodynamic effects of the wings and turn some quick laps. The professionalism of the team made a huge difference and really made my job easy. It truly was the most incredible experience of my life and I want to thank everyone at AIM Autosports for all the help and the opportunity to drive these cars."
Though James has confirmed his upcoming season with AIM Autosports, it is undecided to date in which series he will compete in. If the Canadian Formula Ford Championship is the series of choice, look for Hinchcliffe to make a couple starts in the Fran-Am North American Championship to gain the experience heading to the 2005 racing season.
James is actively seeking sponsorship money to move up the motorsports ladder and advance his career. A step to any of the junior formula series will show spectators where that true champions come from kart racing.
