Sonoma, CA -- Crossing the finish line in 4th place at last weekend's 2000 USAC Formula Russell Championship race, Frank Dancs racked up enough points to secure the championship before the last race is even run. Competing against more than 100 drivers for a trip to the Jim Russell World Scholarship in England and sponsorship for the 2001 Russell Triple Crown Series, Dancs locked up the championship with seven wins, one second place and four third places, accumulating a total of 247 points. "Finishing 4th was my main goal," said Dancs. "I knew the competition this year was strong, so I worked to get points early. So, I didn't want to push too hard and make any mistakes when I was far enough ahead in points to win." Winning Sunday's "A" race was Landon Yee, who was racing in the championship as part of his prize for winning the 99 STAART/HPV Pro Invitational. Second place in the race went to Tim Barber, the 2000 Russell/USAC Triple Crown Pro Series champion; third place was taken by Ross Fonderko, who finished third in the 1999 GRO competition and winning four free races in 2000. The battle for the championship is now for second and third place, which will be determined in the final race of the season, scheduled to run at Sears Point Raceway on November 18. Currently, Fonderko leads for second place with 201 points; Yee is in third with 187, which includes five wins in his last five races. Barber is a close fourth, with 183 points. The USAC Formula Russell Championship Series is an "arrive and drive" racing series at Jim Russell Racing, designed to provide the best value in motorsports competition and advance racing careers. Contenders compete in 10 race weekends at Sears Point Raceway, earning points toward a national USAC Championship. The series champion receives a sponsored season in the Russell/USAC Triple Crown Pro Series and a trip to the Jim Russell World Scholarship in the U.K. The top ten drivers in the series qualify for a berth at the Jim Russell World Scholarships with Russell paying the entry fee and a $750 travel allowance for the top five.
