Caleb Kenney Ends a Great Weekend With Disappointing Results
After a tough weekend of racing in Rounds 5 & 6 of the SCCA Formula Russell Championship, Caleb Kenney entered Rounds 7 & 8 hoping for a rebound with good results. Kenney saw highs and lows thoughout the weekend, starting off with practice on Thursday and Friday before the event. Each day's practice went smooth with Kenney trying new lines and posting competitive lap times on both days. He applied his new found knowledge to Saturday's Round 7 Qualifying that saw Kenney, and session leader Nic LeDuc, the only drivers breaking under the existing track record. Kenney and LeDuc would be set for a great battle for the win in Round 7. Kenney, starting in the off pole position, would get a great start to take the lead with a bold move on the outside of the fast Infineon Turn 1 and would lead with a inside pass in Turn 2. Kenney would hold off a charging LeDuc until just before halfway through the 25 minute race, when LeDuc would use the draft to slingshot around Kenney on the front straight. Kenney would finish a close second just 0.640 of a second behind LeDuc.
In Sunday's Round 8 qualifying, Kenney would be the hotshoe of the day, taking his sixth pole position on the year with a smoking lap of 1:38.125s, re-breaking the track record set by LeDuc in Saturday's Round 7 Qualifying. Kenney would dominate the race, after taking the lead into Turn 2. He would continually post fast laps, including fastest lap of the race at a 1:39.649s, and build a massive 10+ second lead over 2nd place LeDuc. With only 2 laps remaining in the 25 minute race, Kenney, exiting the fast Turn 10, entered the breaking zone of Turn 11 when the Formula Russell suffered a break failure causing Kenney to spin backwards and impact the tire barriers. Kenney's Russell machine was unable to continue and was classified as a DNF.
"I really love the Jim Russell Racing Schools and racing in the Formula Russell Championship. I know, especially in the racing world, that mechanical failures cannot be completely eliminated. The season is far from over and I just want everyone to know that I am now even more dedicated to winning the 2007 Formula Russell Championship," Commented Kenney on Monday after the stress filled race weekend.
Caleb Kenney's next race, Rounds 9 & 10 of the SCCA Formula Russell Championship, will be held at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA on June 9th-10th.
