PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Miller establishes baseline with results of single on-track session

Prepared by: Howden Communications, Inc.

TORONTO, ON (JULY 16, 1999) -- With only a single thirty minute practice / provisional qualifying session available to the Formula Ford competitors at this year's Toronto Molson Indy, rookie F1600 driver Marc Miller remains focused on preparing and fine-tuning his Van Diemen for Saturday's final qualifying session. The American hotshoe is making his professional debut in Toronto and was happy with the half-hour introduction to the tight layout, his crew ready to begin making the necessary changes to their setup.

Without any knowledge of the track, the car that Miller's team had put on the track was off considerably in its gearing requirements and the as a result, it has already enjoyed a serious transmission adjustment. The young Zeeland, MI resident recorded the 16th quickest time of the 40-car field, a testament to Miller's ability to learn a track quickly. Three red flags for incidents resulted in only seven true laps of practice and despite knocking over a second off his time each lap, this lack of track time held Miller from hitting the top ten in his first session.

Miller is making his first Canadian Formula Ford Championship start this weekend and is also beginning a new association with Adams Racing, a professional race car prep shop, also based in Michigan. The team has a great history in U.S. road racing and after sampling the professionalism and competition here in Canada earlier in the year, they are now looking to offer their services to more Canadian pilots. Miller and his race engineer, Clark Camburn, have developed a strong line of communication and are cementing their link with each strategy discussion.

The remaining Formula Ford schedule will see the teams hit the temporary street circuit for qualifying at noon on Saturday, a half-hour session setting the grid for Sunday morning's 45-minute main event. The F1600 race has traditionally been the first wheel-to-wheel competition of the day and this year will follow the same ritual, the team pushing their drivers onto the front straight for their standing start just after the Indy Lights warm-up session.

With Miller and his team now more confident about their car set-up, the young charger is primed for his next shot at the streets of Toronto. With a goal of moving aggressively into the top ten, a position that would put him in the front five rows for the start of the main, Saturday's final qualifying session will be extremely important. But if his past success is any indication, Miller is surely relishing the opportunity to prove his mettle and the expertise of his new team.
