Markelov finished eighth in the 2015 edition of the series and will make the switch from Giles Motorsport to reigning champion M2 Competition.

“It’s New Zealand's premier single-seater category,” said Markelov of TRS. “The standard is good too. As well as the best local talent proving themselves before they go racing internationally, you also have top foreign drivers such as Pedro Piquet."

Piquet will be among Markelov's teammates in the M2 line-up, which will also feature MSA Formula champion Lando Norris, Ferrari junior Guan Yu Zhou and Force India protege Jehan Daruvala.

Markelov has been a part of the GP2 grid for the last two seasons, finishing 13th in 2015 with a maiden podium at Spa, and will continue in the series in 2016.

Canadian duo join grid

TRS has also confirmed that Canadian juniors Devlin DeFrancesco and Kami Laliberte will contest the off-season championship.

Laliberte, son of Cirque du Soleil co-founder Guy, will complete the M2 line-up. He made his car racing debut this year and finished ninth overall in French F4.

DeFrancesco, a Ganassi protege, will contest TRS in preparation for his first full season in open-wheel racing in Britain's MSA Formula - and is yet to confirm the team he'll be racing with in New Zealand.
