Scott Jenkins wins Fran-Am Montreal race; St. Hippolyte's Bruno Spengler answers black flag call and finishes third.

Montreal, Quebec, Canada (August 25, 2002) Scott Jenkins of Portland, Oregon, drove a storybook race to capture his first career Fran-Am 2000 race at the Molson Indy Montreal today. Jenkins, 20, never put a wheel wrong and drove to a 1.360-second margin over Gormely, Ontario's Dan McMullen after taking the lead on lap 12. Polesitter Bruno Spengler, who topped every Fran-Am session this weekend, looked to be on his way to a dominating victory until he relinquished his 14.895-second lead after 11 laps to answer a black flag, stop-and-go penalty for jumping the start.

"It feels great to come here and win today," said Jenkins (#11 EFI/ACG/Team Basi), who finished second in the series debut at Vancouver last month. "We needed a nice comeback after last weekend's race at Mosport. This team is so strong and this is great for all of us. I saw that p1 was getting a black flag, but didn't know why. I just kept driving my own race and today everything went our way."

"The start was okay, but we didn't have any tires," said McMullen, who today captured his second consecutive second place in Fran-Am. "The car finally came in about halfway through the race, but the track still seemed pretty dirty. We did the best we could and started closing on the leader in the end. A podium in both of our races thus far isn't too bad and, hopefully, we can move up one more spot next time."

"I was pushing and pushing for the entire race," said Spengler, who won last weekend's race at Mosport from the pole in his #17 Team Basi entry. "I don't understand why I was black flagged for anticipating the start. But, it's a race and anything can happen. We were very fast today and I still had a lot of fun."

The 18-lap race ran caution free for a duration of 31:20.441 with the top nine cars all finishing on the lead lap. Spengler jumped to an early lead and set the fastest lap of the race at 1:41.597. The race was not without incident as Marc-Antoine Camirand made contact with series point leader Sean McIntosh on the first lap at turn two. McIntosh lost several positions and battled back to finish fifth, however, Camirand retired on lap seven due to mechanical problems.

Chris Green of Beaconsfield, Quebec, finished sixth in his series debut today and Marcelo Gaffoglio moved up to finish eighth after starting 15th in his first-ever Fran-Am race with Condor Motorsports. Barrie, Ontario's Michael Brookes finished in the fourth position.

McIntosh continues to lead the 2002 Fran-Am 2000 championship standings with 64 points. Jenkins moves into second with 58 points followed by Spengler. McMullen moves into the fourth spot overall, with Lucas Strackerjan rounding out the top five.

Round four of the 2002 Fran-Am 2000 National Championship Pro Series continues at Mid-America Motorplex in Omaha, Nebraska, USA, on September 6-8.

The Fran-Am 2000 North American Pro Championship is a cousin of Formula Renault in Europe, South America and China. Each Fran-Am 2000 race features a $25,000 Michelin International supported cash prize fund, with the overall series champion winning a ride with a leading Formula Renault team for the 2003 European series. Formula Renault is recognized worldwide as a primary feeder for the Formula One stars of tomorrow. Recent graduates include McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen (who went straight to Formula One from Formula Renault) as well as Sauber's Felipe Massa.

The Fran-Am 2000 race car features a spec-Tatuus carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, sealed 2.0-liter/186-horsepower motor (capable of running an entire season without a rebuild), 6-speed sequential gearbox, and spec-Michelin Sport racing tires.
