Mueller-Crepon in wheel to wheel action with Schumacher Jr

Twenty-seven years after Michael Schumacher’s debut in 1988, his 16-year-old son Mick made his first single-seater appearance in the 2015 ADAC Formula 4 championship.

Since his debut, he has already notched up a win in the series.

But Schumacher Jr is just another opponent, among the 30-40 young racers for Mueller-Crepon, who drives in the same series for Swiss team Jenzer Motorsport.

“Mick is like any other contender for me - they are the ones to beat. Like all the other drivers, he is a competitor I am battling,” Mueller-Crepon told to Motorsport.com.

Because Schumacher Jr drives for a different team, Mueller-Crepon didn’t get a chance to talk a lot with the young German driver.

“I have talked to him about one or two times and he seems to be a very nice guy,” he added.

On track, they have had some duels which the Swiss driver remembers nicely: “We had some wheel to wheel action in Spa-Francorchamps. We had a more or less fair fight on the track (laughs).”

Sponsors and money key for success

Motorsport has become a highly competitive field in recent years, there are host of young hopefuls trying to make the cut but in today’s time, talent is not enough to get through. A driver must have sponsors and a budget to confirm a seat.

“It is very difficult at the moment because not much money is spent into motorsport. It is indeed very challenging to find new sponsors,” Mueller-Crepon explained.

“Any kind of support is important because I am only at the beginning of my career.

"It also helps you to stay motivated as a driver because they believe in your skills and you were able to successfully show them what you are capable of.”

The childhood dream for Mueller-Crepon is to become a F1 driver but he knows that it is a ‘difficult’ goal to reach and thus admits that endurance racing or touring cars could also be an option for the future.

Enjoying his first season

It has been a learning curve for Mueller-Crepon in his first outing in the competitive Formula 4 series but the 18-year-old is happy with the way things have panned out.

“The feeling of my first full season in ADAC Formula 4 is good so far. Almost every track I arrive at is new to me, so there is always a lot to learn,” said Mueller-Crepon.

“I am looking forward to improve as a driver on and off track. My season has been good so far, I am making visible progress.

"Nevertheless, it is still very important to gain experience and mileage,” he continued.

With five rounds remaining in the season, Mueller-Crepon is hopeful to score points: “My aim for the remainder of the season is to get better every race and score as many points as possible. My long-term aim is to finish on the podium,” he concluded.
