Steam Corners, OH -- (August 10, 2003) -- Race One of the Mid-Ohio weekend was started under threatening skies. The rain came down while the Toyota Atlantics were qualifying and continued, sporadically, throughout the Barber Dodge race. What would the weather do? To hedge their bets, most teams went to the grid with 2 rain tires on and 2 slicks on, as did the Cape Motorsports team. With 8 minutes until the cars were to pull out on the track, Dominic Cape, team owner, made the decision to go with slicks. There was quite a flurry of activity: changing the other two tires, and adjusting sway bars, shock settings, etc. But, it was worthwhile. Brumbaugh said afterwards that he was surprised at how dry the track was. Kudos to all the drivers for being smart on the first lap or so, and not causing any major altercations. The race was fairly uneventful. Brumbaugh, who started seventh, finished in seventh. He was not able to get close enough to the sixth place car of Andrew Prendeville to get around him. Teammates Barber and Aschenbach finished fourth and fifth respectively, while new teammate Baas finished fourteenth.
In the morning warm-up today, Brumbaugh was third fastest. He said that the car felt good and would definitely be ready for the race, which will follow the Champ Car race, scheduled for 2:00 pm.
The nineteen-year-old from Blythewood, SC has the honor of wearing the Cooper Tire logos on his car for these events. Cooper Tire announced Saturday a five-year commitment to the Zetec series. In support of this announcement, Cooper Tire hosted a media luncheon, a T-shirt giveaway (more than 1,000!), other merchandise including hats, and gave away other great prizes.
Brumbaugh said his car was "almost perfect, but just not quite there". He knows that the Cape Motorsports team will be diligent in race prep and he is confident he will have a great finish.
