Nineteen-year-old Billy Asaro of Markham, Ontario, will be driving the races of his life this weekend as he tries to lock up the US Formula 2000 National Championship in a season finale doubleheader event at Sebring International Raceway in Florida. The talented young racer, who secured the USF2000 Oval Crown earlier this season, heads to Sebring with a slim advantage in the National Championship.

The season-ending event was to have taken place at Daytona International Speedway, also in Florida, two weeks ago, but the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington DC forced the postponement of that event. Now, seven weeks after the last race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the championship is set to come to a dramatic conclusion.

With 196 points, Asaro holds a five point lead over Jason LaPoint of Oregon, but with a total of 62 points on the line this weekend (30 for a win and bonus points for pole and most laps led) the Canadian knows he cannot take a conservative approach.

"Being conservative is not likely to be an option this weekend," predicts Asaro. "I will be pushing hard and I'm sure Jason will do the same. My strategy is quite simple: The best defense is a good offense, if I win both races, I will be champion."

Billy is no stranger to victory lane having taken his Key Motorsport / Bellville Rodair International car to three wins this season. The most impressive of those wins came in May at Watkins Glen, New York, where he started fifteenth, yet was leading the race and pulling away after just eight laps.

"I'm going into the final event with a lot of confidence," Asaro said. "The Key Motorsport team has been solid all year. They're professional. They do things properly and don't leave things to chance. They also believe in me as much as I believe in them. It's a powerful combination."

Although he exudes confidence, Billy is not taking anything for granted as he knows LaPoint and his team will show up with just as much confidence and determination.

"It should be a very exciting battle for the championship," he grins. "I'm looking forward to it very much!"

USF2000 activities at Sebring begin this afternoon with practice sessions. Qualifying sessions for both races will be held on Saturday followed by race one. The last race of the season will be held on Sunday afternoon.
