HAMPTON, Ga., Aug. 28 - On Friday afternoon Andy Lally of Northport, N.Y., qualified fourth for Saturday's U.S. Formula 2000 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The race will be held Saturday at 7 p.m., right before the Atlanta 500 Classic Indy Racing League event.

At a time of 42.524 seconds for an average speed of 135.453 mph, Lally was only 0.306 seconds off the time Ryan Hampton set to earn the pole. With his familiar teal and yellow Highcroft Racing Bowman BC5 sponsored by Red Line Oil, SIMTEK, GMP, Slick Eyewear and Maida Development Co., Lally will start right beside current point leader David Besnard.

Lally's teammate, Highcroft Racing's Duncan Dayton of North Salem, N.Y., will start 15th in the 30-car field. He shares the eighth row with bicycling Hall of Famer Greg LeMond. His best lap was a 43.111, or 133.609 mph.

All of the top times were slower than the ones set in a practice session which ended just a half-hour before qualifying started Friday afternoon. Lally was fastest of all in that session with a clocking at 41.158 seconds, or an average speed of 139.948 mph. Drafting was a factor in that session and it wasn't in single-car qualifying, however.

"The draft is crucial here," Lally said. "We have a good starting spot and we'll just have to try to stay out of trouble and see what happens tomorrow."

"Two-tenths of a second less would have made me sixth," Dayton noted. "The field is very close."

A 45-minute practice session at 3:30 p.m. Saturday is the only session remaining before the green flag falls Saturday night on the 30-lap, 45-mile race.

The 1.6-mile course uses AMS's 1.54-mile oval with a chicane added in turn one.

The race is being taped by ESPN2 for broadcast on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. EDT.
