In just his second oval race, USF2000 rookie Billy Asaro claimed second in an exciting contest in which he crossed the line 0.187 seconds behind winner Aaron Justus at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Starting from fourth, Asaro initially fell to fifth, but then mounted an impressive charge to second during the opening laps. Justus had already carved a significant lead, but eighteen year old Asaro broke away from the pack and began to chase down the leader.

Just as Asaro caught Justus and began to look for a way past, the caution flag flew as Larry Vatri spun and made light contact with the wall. When racing resumed several laps later, Justus got the jump on the restart, but, once again, Asaro soon hunted him down and the battle continued.

In the closing stages of the fifty-lap race around the 0.686 mile oval, Asaro worked hard to capture the lead.

"Justus was fast and I just couldn't get by him," Asaro reported. "When I was running close behind him, I developed a lot of understeer because of the dirty air behind his car. I needed him to make a mistake, but he just didn't slip up."

Asaro hoped for a chance late in the race as they came upon lapped traffic, but the very experienced Justus knew exactly how to work through the slower cars.

"Second is great," said Asaro. "We got a one-two finish for Indeck/Forsythe and I got a good bunch of points for the championship. I really have to thank the Primus crew for their hard work this weekend. My mechanic, Ivan, always works like a maniac and my engineer, John Hayes, and I are starting to work well together. I learned a lot from him this weekend."

Now carrying the momentum of his best finish of the season, Asaro anticipates mounting a challenge for the USF2000 championship. The next event, a double header at Road America in Wisconsin, takes place on the July 8-9 weekend.
