SECOND-GENERATION DRIVER DISMORE TAKES FIRST F2000 POLE AT MID-OHIO

LEXINGTON, Ohio – Rookie Mark E. Dismore, of Greenfield, Ind., captured his first professional racing pole for Sunday's U.S. F2000 National Championship Presented by Speedvision Round Six race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Teammate Dan Wheldon, of England, and Aaron Justus, of Vista, Calif., completed the top three. Driving the No. 13 Monster.com Van Diemen Ford, Dismore, son of Indy Racing League star Mark A. Dismore, turned a fastest lap of 1:23.695 (97.124 mph) in the last minute–shattering the old track record of 1:24.155 (96.593 mph) set by Matt Sielsky. "I thought the car was good and I got down to a 1:24.1 or 1:24-flat, but I couldn't get it to go any faster–believe me, I was trying," said Dismore, 18. "I eased off a bit and bam! I saw a 1:23.6 on my screen. I was rushing the car too much early. The guy who goes fastest is the one who goes the deepest." Wheldon, driving the No. 5 Primus Racing Van Diemen Ford, was quickest for most of the session, but finished second with a lap of 1:23.856 (96.937 mph). Wheldon, who sits second in points to Marc-Antoine Camirand, will start second for the third time in six 1999 races. Justus, who took both poles at the initial two road course rounds (Mosport International Raceway), will start third in the No. 24 Cape/Torco Racing Lubricants/MiR Van Diemen Ford with a lap of 1:24.003 (96.767 mph). Mexican Rolando Quintanilla and Steve Rikert, of Rhinebeck, N.Y. completed the top-five–all of whom were under the track qualifying record. Guy Cosmo, of South Setauket, N.Y., took the pole for the American Continental Championship, 16th overall, with a time of 1:25.501 (95.072 mph).
