Caracas, July.16.2007. After his first F2000 Pro win at Cleveland two weeks ago, Ricardo Vassmer, the young PDVSA/CITGO/Zoom sponsored driver from Caracas, Venezuela, just completed this weekend two more successful races at the 2007 US Hankock F2000 Championship Series:
On Friday 07.13 Vassmer finished second and third on the first two official practice sessions.
On Saturday 07.14, he qualified second for the first race, where he finished on the podium in second place, less than a second behind Tim Dunn, a veteran Mid Ohio driver .
On Sunday 07.15, Vassmer got on the Pole on his last qualifying lap. Race two started as a shoot out between Ricardo and Cole Morgan, drag racing their cars from the green flag down to turn seven. Morgan got the edge over Vassmer, and the heat was on. However, a double yellow slowed the action down, until action went back to green two laps later. Ricardo lost another spot to the Championship leader, Matt McDonough, again in turn seven, however a new full course double yellow freezes the race again, as the cars of Mike Andersen and Rob Nichols blocked the track at the keyhole.
The race officials showed a red flag and action stopped completely, resuming the race behind the pace car for three more laps. When the green flag came out there where only two more laps to go, running Morgan in first, Mc Donough in second and Vassmer in third position. Vassmer pushed hard on Mc Donough first time through turn seven, the only passing option you have at Mid Ohio, but with no success. However, on the very last lap, and with a masterminded approach, Ricardo landed an absolutely outstanding , clean pass on Mc Donough in turn seven, but run short of time to go for Morgan. Ricardo finished the race in second position behind Cole Morgan. Mc Donough finished third, and Ricardo's team mates, Terrick Mansur and Noah Bystrom finished fourth and fifth. Ricardo landed also the fastest race lap.
Ricardo commented after the second race: "Mid Ohio is a fun track to drive, but quite difficult to race, as turn seven is the only passing opportunity per lap. Andersen Racing , again, gave me a superb car. My engineer , Greg Machiato , was able to translate my feed back into immediate improvement after each pit stop. J.R. got me a free spot in both qualifying sessions, and Mike Andersen, my driving coach, helped me to find the extra few split seconds to start in the front line of each race. This was good and hard wheel to wheel racing. The car is getting better by each race and we are looking forward to the next action at Lime Rock"
