F2000: Erickson on Pole at Road America

Elkhart Lake, WI -- Daniel Erickson annihilated the F2000 track record at Road America en route to pole position for race one of the weekend with a flying lap of 2:15.271, nearly three tenths up on the record. Jonathan Scarallo was just a tenth off the Australian rookie and will line up second as the young American was the fastest driver during Friday practice in his R-Sport Van Diemen. Championship points leader Victor Carbone was a solid third ahead of Chris Livengood and Scarallo's R-Sport teammate, Keith McCrone.

"It's a good day at the office," said Erickson, who is driving the #2 for Primus Racing/Quantum Mechanics and was on the top of the time sheets for pretty much the entire 30-minute green flag session. "I'm really pleased with the car; it stayed fast the entire session which says a lot about what we may have for race pace. I ran a really quick lap in the draft and then set the fastest lap of the session by myself."

Jonathan Scarallo, bettering his under-the-track-record time from yesterday will line up second alongside Erickson. Scarallo commented: "I'm a bit disappointed because we were going for the pole and came very close, so it's bittersweet. The race is something else though, both lines can work at the start and then we have to remember to be patient and work the draft. I need to be there at the end."

Championship points leader Victor Carbone settled for third. His main challenger in the title fight, Cole Morgan, will have to come from ninth. Carbone's Alegra Motorsports team made a rear-wing change late in the day yesterday which saw the #23 move up the time sheets.

"We expected a bit more," said the Brazilian. "I'd like to be further up than third so I'll have to try and move up in the race. Even though Cole (Morgan) is back in ninth, in my head he's up front and I'd like to win the race."

Chris Livengood, running a similar stock aero setup like the R-Sport cars, was the second fastest rookie and qualified his 1999 chassis in fourth position follow by Keith McCrone, the top Masters Class driver.

"I went out on cold tires at first and made some dumb mistakes," Livengood, driving for Work Racing, said. "I was over thinking and ended up in the pits and then I sort of reset my head. The car is feeling good but there is more top-end speed we need to find."

Fabio Orsolon was sixth fastest, Carbone's teammate. Stevan McAleer will start seventh for the Race House in his fifth F2000 race to date and has been known to make up positions at the drop of the green. Following McAleer and rounding out the top ten will be Brian Belardi, Cole Morgan and Mikhail Goikhberg.

Morgan, who is sitting 61 points back in the title chase, said: "We're getting better but we are so far lost from yesterday. We're throwing some big changes at the chassis."

Both Erickson and Scarallo were under the existing qualifying record with the top 11 cars clocking in under the existing race record at Road America.

St. Clair Motorsports teammates Bill Jordan and Chris Gumprecht missed the session due to crash damage from yesterday. Bill Jordan is expected to make the race.

F2000 action from Road America continues later today with race one of the weekend, with an estimated start time of 4:15 pm local time. Tomorrow, Sunday August 8, features another 10:55 am qualifying session and 4:15 pm race start. All times are GMT -6.
