Urlin sweeps poles at VIR.
ALTON, VA (October 26, 2002) -J.W. Urlin, London, Ont., Can., captured the pole for Sunday's Round 14 of the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship at VIRginia International Raceway, equaling the feat he accomplished for Saturday's Round 13. Completing the top-three were Doug Prenderville, of Morristown, N.J., and Bryan Sellers, of Centerville, Ohio. The top ACC qualifier was Jeff Sakowicz, of Camarillo, Calif.
On a wet track, in cool morning conditions, the Zetec Championship took to the 3.27-mile road course for a 20-minute qualifying session. From the very beginning of the session, Urlin, in the No. 19 Budget Rent A Car/Mygale Cars OTM Motorsports Mygale Ford, displayed the speed that gave him the pole for race one. As the session progressed, the track steadily got faster as it began to dry. By the halfway point, Sellers, driving the No. 3 Yes Network/3 Dimensional Services/Arai/Sparco Van Diemen Ford, had moved into second position. With just over five minutes remaining, a car spun and became high-sided halting the session. Almost immediately as the black flag was displayed, Prenderville, in the No. 55 John Walko Racing Van Diemen Ford, leaped to the top of the charts with a great lap. After the brief stoppage, the session resumed with just enough time for the cars to get in two laps.
Falling behind the pack, Urlin was able to get a clean second flying lap, with which he retook the pole position with a fast lap of 2:06.394 (93.137 mph), completing the sweep for the doubleheader.
"It's overwhelming to win both poles," said Urlin, who is the only series regular driving the Mygale chassis. "I waited after the black flag to try and find an opening and it worked to perfection. I'm looking forward to the races, hopefully it's wet."
"The car was great," said Prenderville, who finished second at the 2002 SCCA Valvoline Runoffs in Formula Continental. "I was worried after the black flag. I got caught in traffic, but my time held up nicely."
"The car could have benefited from a few more changes," said Sellers, who has won six races in 2002. "I'm looking forward to the race, as I know Cape Motorsports will give me a great car."
"I couldn't be happier," said Sakowicz, who has contested three races this year. "To get the ACC pole in my first-ever session in the rain is great."
Completing the top-five were Jeffrey Jones, of Sarasota, Fla, in the No. 2 JCI Chemical/Winchester Roquin Motorsport Van Diemen Ford and Ricardo Imery, of Caracas, Venezuela, in the No. 5 Cavenas/Venezolana de Ascensor Pabst Racing Van Diemen Ford.
