AWR's Prendeville and Pecorari Finish Second and Fourth Saturday in First Half of Zetec Doubleheader at Infineon
SONOMA, Calif., July 17 - Andersen Walko Racing's Andrew Prendeville of Monroeville, Pa. vaulted from fourth to second and was closing on the eventual winner when the checkered waved Saturday in the Formula Ford Zetec race at Infineon Raceway, part of the Cooper Tires championship.
His teammate, Adam Pecorari of Aston, Pa., set a new track record in qualifying to win the pole. He had some kind of problem with his car during the race but still finished fourth in the 17-lap contest on the 2.53-mile road course.
Prendeville drives the Andersen Walko Racing/Racelink/Roos Racing School Van Diemen Ford #25, while Pecorari was in the SAI Hydraulics/Andersen Walko Racing Van Diemen Ford #28.
Pecorari's pole was his second consecutive one and his second consecutive new track record. This one went into the books as 1:34.085 (86.207 mph).
There is another FF Zetec race at Infineon tomorrow afternoon. Then the series returns to Mid-Ohio Aug. 8. Events at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. on Aug. 22 and in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Oct. 10 round out the schedule.
Driver quotes follow:
Prendeville: "We struggled a little bit with our set-up in testing. Then we had a clutch problem, and the crew worked late last night to get everything sorted out. I didn't get the qualifying lap I wanted, but the car was great in the race today.
"I jumped back to fifth at the start. I don't remember when I got back around [Jason] Bowles, but then I dueled with [Ian] Lacy for awhile. We caught a backmarker, and I was able to get by Lacy in the hairpin. Then I had to pass Adam [Pecorari]. We caught another backmarker. I went up on the inside of one and out-broke Adam to take second place. Then I had to try for [Bobby] Wilson. I was catching him, but I was probably about five laps short today.
"He won, and without drops I think he's two points up now.
"I'm starting fourth tomorrow. Wilson is starting first, so I have my work
cut out for me tomorrow. I have to do what I did today and try to finish even
one place better. The championship is close; we need every point we can get."
Pecorari: "I had a pretty big wreck in practice yesterday, but the Andersen Walko crew did a great job getting the car back together and making sure I was able to challenge for the pole. We came back to set a new track record and win the pole in qualifying.
"I led the race at the start. Then we had a yellow flag, and on the restart I went back to second. The car was running great and then in like one lap it suddenly went away. I don't know if it was the tires or what. We're going to go over the car and check it over, but something definitely went away.
"Wilson won; Andrew [Prendeville] was second; Jay Howard was third and I was fourth.
"We start third tomorrow and Andrew starts fourth. We don't race until 5 o'clock tomorrow, so we have time to find whatever is wrong with the car and fix it."
