Sammin takes a step higher on Formula Ireland podium.

Following his much acclaimed third place in the Opening Round of the new Formula Ireland Championship at Mondello, Paul Sammin climbed one step higher on the podium at Kirkistown on Saturday 25th May. Mayo's rising motorsport star was looking good for this second place finish after qualifying on the front row of the grid. Just 0.3 seconds separated the Louisburgh driver from pole setter Robbie Coleman with Formula Europa Champion John O'Hora on the second row and ex-Benelux Champion Peter Walsh on Row 4.

Going into this second round of the 10 race series, Paul used all his experience gained while racing at the Northern Irish circuit in both Formula Vee and Formula Europa. The 'Western People Sports Star of the Year Award' winner consolidated that position throughout the 15 laps while keeping pressure on race winner Coleman, son of Cork Rally legend Billy.

Paul's 170bhp Ford powered Van Diemen harried Coleman right from the green lights and on occasion pulled alongside the first round race winner. But as the race progressed, his Alan McGarrity Motorsport prepared car suffered brake problems towards the end and Paul quite happily settled for second. Peter Walsh a former US F2000 race winner finished third.

"Moving up a step on the podium was a brilliant result for me so soon into the season," expressed Paul after the race. Without the assistance of Willie McNeely and my sponsors, this achievement would not be possible. I'm really looking to my first race win and hopefully will come in the next round in front of an estimated 40,000 people who will attend the British Touring Car Championship weekend at Mondello on June 22nd/23rd.
