Zurich, 05 December 2001: Premier1 Grand Prix, the innovative new motor sport series that will pitch the world's top soccer clubs into Formula 1 style race track competition, will kick off in March 2003. During the past weeks, a provisional calendar had been announced for the second half of 2002.
However, in consultation with the participating football clubs, it has been decided that little more time is needed to finalise the complex commercial arrangements with the chosen race circuits involved in the creation of such an ambitious and far reaching new motor sport championship.
"We have been overwhelmed by the huge enthusiasm for Premier1 Grand Prix coming from the many parties involved and that includes positive response from football clubs, television companies, race teams and drivers, corporate sponsors and licensing partners as well as the FIA, motor sport's governing body. Their passion for our plan means that we must ensure that everything is in place before the races commence," explains Christian Scholbrock, Director of Marketing of Premier1 Grand Prix. "These extra eight months will guarantee Premier1 Grand Prix's long-term success."
The rearranged schedule will also give Reynard Motorsport more valuable time to develop the 320+kmh single-seater racer being built exclusively for the Premier1 Grand Prix championship. Technical specifications are currently being finalised and the first Premier1 Grand Prix prototype is expected to start testing next April.
"There was very little contingency in our original timing," says Robin Webb, Operations Director of Premier1 Grand Prix. "The extra eight months we have now given ourselves will provide us with a little bit more breathing space for the build, supply and full testing of the 50 single-seater chassis required for the series.
"We have taken this decision not only to enable all those eager to play a major role in Premier1 Grand Prix to plan their future activities but also for us to ensure all the complex marketing and merchandising programmes are fully up to speed when the series roars into action. I emphasise that everything is still firmly on track and that we will be revealing the identity of new partner clubs from counties including France, Germany and Spain in the next few weeks."
Four of Europe's foremost clubs -- RSC Anderlecht, Benfica Lisbon, Feyenoord Rotterdam and Leeds United -- have already announced their presence on the Premier1 Grand Prix grid.
