Renault's Eurocup series to join Monaco GP support bill

The spot on F1's support bill at Monte Carlo has previously belonged to WSR's headline event Formula Renault 3.5.

However, with Renault stepping back from the FR3.5 series, the French manufacturer has seemingly an agreement to hold a Eurocup round on the street circuit instead.

The series, which has recently established itself mainly as a stepping stone into either FR3.5 or European F3, has Valtteri Bottas, Stoffel Vandoorne and Robin Frijns among its former champions.

It has not raced on a street track since 2005, when a meeting was held at the now-defunct Circuito Urbano Bilbao.

However, Eurocup-spec two-litre Formula Renault cars have regularly featured as a part of the street-circuit Pau Grand Prix, either as a standalone event or as part of the FR2.0 Alps series.

Five events with ELMS

The revamped World Series by Renault, made up of the one-make Renault Sport Trophy series and the aforementioned Eurocup, will link up with the European Le Mans Series on six occasions in 2016.

FR3.5 had shared the Spielberg round with ELMS earlier this year, but neither the Eurocup, nor the Renault Sport Trophy were present.

"During a period of reconstruction for the feeder series’, we are thrilled to have concluded this agreement with the ELMS to organize our championships," said Jean-Pascal Dauce, Renault Sport Technologies' director of motorsport.

Next season, four ELMS events are set feature both the Eurocup and Renault Sport Trophy - at Spielberg, Paul Ricard, Spa and Estoril. The latter championship is also set to join ELMS at Imola in May.
