Ruapuna TRS: Cockerton scores maiden win in Race 2
Sophomore driver Taylor Cockerton secured his first Toyota Racing Series victory by winning the second race at Ruapuna.
Cockerton became the second Kiwi driver to win this weekend following Marcus Armstrong's triumph in Race 1.
As the grid was set by reversing the top six of Saturday's race, Pedro Piquet started from pole.
However, the Brazilian was demoted by Cockerton at the very beginning of the race and was also attacked by Thomas Randle.
With Piquet busy defending, Cockerton managed to pull away in no time, extending his advantage to over a second, which he kept until the finish.
Piquet withstood race-long from Randle, who completed the podium.
Red Bull junior Richard Verschoor could not keep up with the top three and took fourth ahead of Ferrari's Armstrong.
Brendon Leitch held sixth for most of the race but lost out to Ferdinand Habsburg in the end.
Force India junior Jehan Daruvala, second in Race 1, was set to finish eighth before the Indian stopped during the late stages.
That allowed Indy Lights regular Shelby Blackstock to take the position ahead of Kami Laliberte and Harry Hayek.
UPDATE: Cockerton lost his race win after receiving a 10-second time penalty for a false start, dropping him to fourth in the order.
Second placed Piquet was also penalised and was handed a 30-second time penalty and three demerit points for his incident with Randle. He dropped to 17th as a result.
Therefore, Randle took the victory with both Verschoor and Armstrong promoted to the podium spots in second and third respectively.
