Bud Risser is one of the Skip Barber Race Series' most interesting and appreciated customers. A veteran racer who shows no signs of slowing down, Risser is a three-time Master's Champion and the owner of multiple Skip Barber Race Series wins. At 59, he holds the distinction of being the oldest, winning racer.
Risser became part of the Skip Barber family in April 1989 when he took his Three-Day Racing School at Sebring. After graduating, he rented a ride in regional SCCA racing. While the ride was competitive, he didn't warm to some of the controversial flagging by SCCA officials. He tried our series and has been a loyal customer, fixture in the series, since. He can't imagine why any amateur would race elsewhere, unless they like to work on cars.
While he has numerous on-track accomplishments, including a spirited win over Skip Barber Instructor Gerardo Bonilla at Moroso, Risser is most pleased with a run earlier this year at Daytona. After starting from the 13th position, Risser advanced and was contesting second place near the end. He ended up in third, but it was close and he tripped the fastest time of the group. His best overall memory was his first series win in Savannah several years ago.
Among the savvy racers Risser has had to contend with this year were Matt Franc and eventual Southern Series Champion Craig Duerson.
"Franc and I split wins at Moroso, and he bested me elsewhere," said the Masters Champion. "He's great to run with, gives safe space and runs hard. I tried every old trick at Moroso and held him outside at the chicane. I never thought someone could get past me there but he executed flawlessly and was successful on the last lap for the win. And he really deserved it. I'd like to say Duerson, since I've raced him a lot this year, but the only time I really saw him was the memorial when my supertrap fell off."
Risser is most pleased with the Skip Barber Race Series' emphasis on safety.
"Experienced observers not only help with feedback, they also see moves that shouldn't happen in an open-wheeled series, and they do something about it. I also like the pure opportunity to get in a car that can win the race. Where else can you do that, unless you want to spend an awful amount of money? It has become a social thing with us. We really look forward to sharing the weekend and the evenings with other racers, spouses or friends, and the Skip Barber staff. It's fun at its best."
Risser, a wholesaler of gasoline through service stations and convenience stores, lives in Florida with his wife Fran, a longtime supporter and fan of her husband.
