Skip Barber trained racers make up all six finalists for this year's TEAM USA Scholarship, to take place at Formula Palmer Audi's exclusive test track at Thurleigh Airfield, England. Two drivers -- to be selected by a panel of judges -- will be invited to contest the 2000 Euro Formula Palmer Audi Winter Series, which comprises two races each on consecutive weekends at Snetterton [November 12] and Brands Hatch [November 19].
Now entering its 11th year, the TEAM USA program was founded by current Champ Car magazine editor Jeremy Shaw. The goal of the scholarship is to provide an awareness of talented young American drivers and assist in their graduation up the auto-racing ladder via the ultra-competitive circuits of Europe.
In addition to testing, the candidates are scheduled to tour Cosworth Engineering in Northampton and Reynard Motorsport in Brackley with possible trips to Lola Cars International, Jaguar and/or Jordan Formula 1 headquarters.
Competing this year are six of the potentially shiniest stars in racing. The 1999 Big Scholarship winner and Barber Dodge Pro Series racer Ryan Hunter-Reay; Formula Dodge National Championship runner-up Bryan Sellers; Barber Dodge Pro Series veteran Andy Lally, participating for the second consecutive year. Also running is Tom Dyer, a 24-year old out of San Rafael, California, with a background in karting, ACC and U.S. F2000. His training includes lapping exercises at the Skip Barber Racing School, Sears Point; Phil Giebler, from Oxnard, California, a multiple karting champion who has run in the French Formula 3 Promotion class; twenty-one year old Joey Hand, also a karting champion, the 1999 Formula Mazda champion. Among his many racing stops in 2000 was the Barber Dodge Pro Series at Mid-Ohio.
Past scholarship winners include CART Champ Car drivers Bryan Herta, Jimmy Vasser and Memo Gidley; Dayton Indy Lights racers Tony Renna and Jeff Simmons; recently crowned Toyota Atlantic Champion Buddy Rice; NASCAR Winston Cup talent Jerry Nadeau; Formula Palmer Audi Winter Series Champion Paul Edwards.
