The first round of the Formula Dodge Midwestern Regional championship got underway at Grattan Raceway in Grattan, Mich. on May 20-21. The event was held in conjunction with the inaugural round of the Formula Dodge National Championship Presented by RACER. Just like the National Championship races, the Midwestern Series produced some wonderfully entertaining racing.

Andre D'Cruze came over from the U.K. to take the victory in both races for Group 1. He was followed by Grant Maiman both times, with Erick Hansen taking the third step on the podium in race 1 while Raphael Martin captured third place in race 2. D'Cruze led 19 of the 20 laps in race 1, although Maiman and Hansen were right there with him the entire race. Hansen was the mover and shaker in the group as he jumbled the top-three for three laps mid-race, actually leading at the end of lap-9 before D'Cruze and Maiman regained first and second. Charles Hilmer, fourth overall, took the Master's class win.

In the second race, D'Cruze and Maiman went 1-2 wire-to-wire. Martin meanwhile went on a tear through the field. Starting 11th, he was in seventh by the end of the first lap and steadily worked his way one place at a time to be in third by lap-16 where he would finish the race. Jay Carll was the Master's class winner, finishing sixth overall.

Goups 2 and 4 were the National Championship races, so we move to Groups 3 and 5.

Brian Kubinski took a 2.3 sec. win over Curt Andrews and Cliff Sigmann in race 1 for Group 3. Kubinski stalked pole-sitter Andrews until lap-14 when the two swapped positions. Two laps later, Andrews slipped to third before regaining second place on the last lap. Sigmann started the race fourth before finally settling for third following his duel with Andrews. Sigmann's third overall was good for the Master's class win.

Andews started race two from second on the grid, but assumed the lead on the opening lap. This time it was his for keeps, winning it flag-to-flag. Kubinsky came in second this time after dueling with Revere Greist and Martin Zimmerman in the early going. Gary Longo had a gang-buster drive as he made his way up to third-place from his eighth starting spot. Sigmann made it two-for-two in the Master's class.

Life was a bed of roses for Tim Rose. He didn't miss a beat in Group 5 leading 40 out 40 laps raced, and thereby the win in both race 1 and 2. His margin of victory in race 1 was a whopping 32 sec., and 24 sec. in race 2. Whitney Bellows and John Greist replicated the finishing feat for second and third places respectively. Their races however were not as straightforward as Rose's. Bellows and Greist swapped places three times before they finally settled into their finishing positions. For his efforts, Greist was also rewarded with the master's class win.

Race 1 was apparently enough work for Bellows as he took second place in the early going ahead of Griest in third, and there they remained for the duration. As in race 1, Greist was the Master's class victor.

At the end of the weekend, D'Cruze and Rose equal one another atop the point's table with Kubinsky and Andrews equals in the second spot. Maiman and Bellows share third overall.
