GURNEY MAKES PROFESSIONAL DEBUT AT SEBRING

Team Green Academy Ace in Barber Dodge Pro Series

March 18 - SEBRING, Fla. - Alex Gurney is making his professional racing debut this Saturday, March 21, in the opening round of the 1998 Barber Dodge Pro Series, part of the 47th running of the 12 Hours of Sebring.

At 23, Gurney is the freshest face on the American racing scene and is none other than the youngest son of American racing legend and CART team owner, Dan Gurney. The bloodlines and the desire to win are a part of the package with Alex.

Gurney is piloting a Team KOOL Green-sponsored Reynard-Dodge for the 1998 season after being selected as the top student from the Team Green Academy driver development program's Class of '97/'98.

"I'm anxious to get this first race under my belt," said Gurney, a native of Newport Beach, Calif. "I'd like to have a clean run and come away with a good finish. It's a long season and I'm competing against guys with much more experience. I think it's best to take a conservative approach and drive my own race."

Gurney was anything but conservative last season when he racked up 10 wins in 14 races en route to rookie of the year honors and the runner-up spot in the Barber Formula Dodge Midwest Series. His performance caught the eye of Team Green Academy principals and led to his inclusion in the most recent Academy.

"Alex has surprised us with how quickly he comes to grips with a situation," said Team KOOL Green general manager Kim Green. "He has a lot of potential and I'm predicting he will rise to the challenge of racing in this highly competitive series."

The Barber Dodge Pro Series is America's primary feeder series in the PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship, which is the official development series for CART. The Sebring race is the first of a 12-event schedule. All Barber Dodge Pro Series races air on a tape-delay basis on ESPN2.
