Barber-CART Rookie of the Year Ryan Hunter-Reay of Boca Raton, Fla. emerged as the quickest of the lot in a pre-race test at Phoenix International Raceway in Phoenix, Az. Practice and qualifying for the second round of the 2001 Barber Dodge Pro Series gets underway in Phoenix Thursday, April 19.
Two test sessions were run today in very hot temperatures with Hunter-Reay's time of 0:59.245 sec. around the 1.51-mile infield road course being the quickest on the day. Barber-CART Big Scholarship winner Jon Morley was quickest in the second session that generally saw slower times than in the first as the mid-day sun made the track surface more slippery. His fastest tour, like Hunter-Reay's, came right at the end of the session with a time of 59.529 sec.
There was little if any consistency in the times from the two sessions highlighted by the fact that Hunter-Reay could only manage the seventh quickest time in the second session while Morley vaulted from ninth to be the quickest on the second. The balance of the drivers in the top ten remained largely the same though in a much jumbled order.
"I think most of us haven't been to this track before so the first session was really a learning experience," said Hunter-Reay. "In the second session, the temperature rose quite a bit from the morning so the track really changed. Another tenth of a second faster and I would have been third quick. Most of the times from the second session were very close, so it really highlights the importance of a good qualifying session.
"There is really very little opportunity to pass here. Getting a good tow out of turn-9 back onto the oval portion of the track is what'll make the difference in qualifying," added Hunter-Reay <pre> The ten quickest in test session 1:
