Round 7 of the Formula Dodge National Championship Series Presented by RACER
Skip Barber Karting Scholarship winner Craig Baltzer entered round 7 of the Formula Dodge National Championship Series Presented by RACER with high expectations hoping to build on his successful showing at the series previous round at Putnam Park. The Iowa native qualified 7th for the weekends first race out of a strong 19 car field, posting a time of 1:41.799 round the 2.5 mile IRP road course. Wisconsin's Grant Maiman would pace the field, stopping the clocks only 0.385 seconds faster. At the start, Baltzer maneuvered his way up to 4th position but this would not last as he began to be pressured from behind by the end of the first lap. Craig steadily fell back to the P-10 position before clawing back to an eventual 8th place finish at the conclusion of the 16-lap event. Baltzer set a fast time of 1:41.625. while scoring 8 more points to his total of 38 on the season.
Craig:
"Due to the changeable conditions this weekend I wasn't able to evaluate the car as I would have liked and it showed. During the race I over cooked my tires a bit trying to hang with the top 3 and I quickly developed an under steer coming out of the corners. I recognized it and tried to ease into the power as smooth as I could but it didn't seem to make much difference. I was however, able to gain back a couple of lost positions by using the draft down the long main straight. Although the final result is not quite what I had planned, I was able to keep my points streak alive by banking 8 more points toward the Championship. I feel I have a handle on what my weaknesses have been and I really have to focus on doing better in those areas. A very special thanks to Skip Barber, Dodge, Michelin, RACER Magazine, Lakefront Technologies, and Socal Decal Works for their continued and very appreciated support."
Round 8 of the Formula Dodge National Championship Series Presented by RACER
Round 8 of the Skip Barber Formula Dodge National Championship Series Presented by RACER saw Midwest driver Craig Baltzer emerge from morning qualifying in 11th position with a time of 1:41.841 round the 2.5 mile Indianapolis Raceway Park road course. Race action was intense through out the field as Baltzer fought his way up to 8th position after 16-laps of battle. The finish was worth 8 additional championship points giving Baltzer 54 for the season. Baltzer currently sits in 8th position out of 30drivers in the standings heading into the next round at Canada's scenic and historic Mont Tremblant circuit outside Montreal on August 2-4.
Craig:
"Our qualifying session for this race was shortened to 10 minutes due to time constraints. With only 5 laps, I didn't get a handle on the car to be able to set my most competitive lap time. My goal for the race was to move up and salvage as many points as I could. Before the race, I took advantage of Friday's tech seminar by Skip Barber instructor Carl Lopez on the effects of ride height and made some adjustments to lower the front of the R/T 2000. This was to try and give the car a little more stability in the front end and it seemed to work very well during the race. Combined with a brake bias change, the car was the best it had been all weekend which enabled me to duel my way up the leader board. Experience like this just doesn't come any other way. Its all apart of paying my dues and learning the ropes. I just have to be able to apply what I learn, keep my head down and drive like heck."
