RAIN HAMPERS LIME ROCK RACE AS GURNEY FINISHES 19th

LAKEVILLE, Conn., (May 25, 1998) – Rain made for slippery conditions in Round 2 of the Barber Dodge Pro Series at Lime Rock Park, playing a direct role in the performance of Team KOOL Green’s Alex Gurney.

Norway’s Thomas Schie won today’s 30-lap race, crossing the finish line .890 seconds in front of Todd Snyder of Sheffield, Mass., and Rino Mastronardi of Italy in third. Gurney, a native of Newport Beach, Calif., qualified 12th, but the slick track saw him finish 19th in the 31-car field.

As the rain started early in the race, Gurney was caught in a messy situation when several cars spun in front of him. He was forced to bail out onto the grass, causing him to lose track position. The Team Green Academy graduate for ‘97/’98 could not gain any ground, as the wet weather made it virtually impossible to pass. The race ended in a driving rain storm with standing water on the track.

Alex Gurney, #27 Team KOOL Green Reynard-Dodge: (Qualified 12th / Finished 19th)

ON THE RACE: “I was pretty happy with my situation early in the race. I hung back and waited for the cars at the front to sort themselves out and I was running well.

“Then Jon Fogarty spun in front of Giovanni Anapoli and I was right behind Anapoli. Anapoli went right and I went left. Unfortunately for me, Fogarty spun to his left and I had no choice but to go off the track and onto the grass. That pretty well finished my day.

“It was pretty disappointing because I felt we’d finally found the correct setup on the car and I was moving up.”

ON ROUND 3 IN DETROIT: “We’re going to be racing on the same weekend as the CART guys and that should be really exciting. And it will be the first time my father will have had the opportunity to see me race in person. I’m really looking forward to it.”
