Miller Wins at the Grand Prix of Cleveland

In spite of a difficult first race, points leader Joel Miller found a way to win again in the BF Goodrich Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda series. Rounds 5 & 6 took place this weekend in support of the Champ Car Grand Prix of Cleveland at the Burke Lakefront airport

Starting Friday and progressing throughout the weekend, spectators poured into the paddock and grandstand areas. Racing right on the lakefront and beneath the sky scrapers of Cleveland, the atmosphere was perfect for an outstanding weekend. At the start of race one, Miller quickly move toward the front from his 8th place starting position. However, a freak engine electrical problem hampered his progression, forcing him to nurse the car to a 13th finishing position. "It was frustrating because I was feeling the effects of the problem starting on lap 3," said Miller after the race. "I know the Skip Barber mechanics will work hard to find the problem and have the car ready for tomorrow's competition," Miller continued.

Race two on Sunday afternoon saw a completely different conclusion than Saturday's feature. Starting P7, Miller drove a different car and showed he had the speed to win from the drop of the green flag. Working cautiously through Cleveland's treacherous turn 1, he was able to set himself up for overtaking in turn 3. By the end of lap 1 Miller was in 5th and moving forward quickly. A great battle materialized with the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place drivers, and at the end of lap 4 Miller had caught the leader. After swapping positions numerous times, Miller stayed in second until making his final pass to take the lead. "The track was getting really slick and if I didn't push the tires hard I was able to get grip again for a few laps," Miller said. Once Miller made his pass on the leader he never looked back. Pulling out to a 2.74 second lead over second place Joel Miller took the checkered flag for his second win of the season in the Skip Barber National Championship Series.

"The race today worked out perfectly, I got through turn one and picked off cars one by one until I got to the front," said Miller during the press conference following the race. Despite the result on Saturday, Miller has been able to extend his championship lead to 17 points over second position.
