Ricky Taylor Wins Inaugural Skip Barber National Race at Sebring

Sebring, Florida (March 16, 2007) -- Ricky Taylor won his first Skip Barber National Race this weekend at Sebring International Raceway, home of the historic 12 Hours of Sebring race. Friday's race was only the second professional National race in the 17-year-old's young racing career.

Ricky, son of sports car driving champion Wayne Taylor, will compete in 14 BFGoodrich Skip Barber National Series Presented by Mazda races over seven race weekends during the 2007 season. The event was held Friday, March 16th at Sebring International Raceway and was the inaugural race of the season.

The high school junior from Apopka, Florida started from the pole position and led every lap in today's race. The 30-minute race featured one lengthy caution and many tight battles, especially on the restart.

"I got in a good battle with Timmy (Megenbier) early on," said the young Taylor. "I was kind of worried it was going to come down to the last lap but I was lucky he got caught up in a battle at the end and I was able to get away for the last two laps.

"I think the restart was basically the turning point of the race," Taylor added. "I defended my line down the inside and he went around the outside. We were side-by-side for a couple of corners. With three laps to go, I think, he went to the outside and we were side-by-side for a couple of corners through (Turns) One, Two and Three. We were going down to Turn Five together and he got boxed in there. Someone else passed him and he lost a lot of ground there."

Ricky had another Skip Barber National Series race on Thursday, March 15. He started from the fourth position and after suffering electrical problems, managed to finish in sixth place. His combined points for the two races puts him second place in the 2007 National points standings. Winning the pole position awarded one additional valuable point.

"It was definitely a good start to the season," said the elated teenager. "Unfortunately the sixth place in Thursday's race kept me from leading the points, but the win helped put me back into it for my first National weekend."

"Having Ricky get the pole and win at Sebring on the same weekend as the 12 Hours of Sebring race is a really great start for the season," said proud father Wayne Taylor. "It was pretty impressive! He did a good job in the race and drove smart. I told him beforehand not to worry about winning the race but that it was important to get the points. Ricky really wants to win the Skip Barber National Championship this year because it's a really big deal. They award the winner a season ride in the Star Mazda Pro Series and that's what Ricky really wants to do next. I'm very excited for him."

Round Two of the BFGoodrich Skip Barber National Series will be held at Virginia International Raceway on April 27-29. Wayne Taylor Racing will be fielding their popular No. 10 SunTrust Racing Pontiac Riley the same weekend in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series.
