The Formula Dodge National Championship Presented by RACER meets at Gateway International Raceway for rounds 9 and 10 of the 2000 series. Unique to this event, the National Championship drivers will be showcasing their skills before a score of Viper owners as a part of the 6th annual National Dodge Viper convention.
Also unique to this particular gathering, National Championship drivers qualified today, Friday, for round 9 to be run tomorrow and round 10 to be run on Sunday.
Round 9 qualifying took place beneath a blazing midday sun that saw track temperatures in the low 100’s. Scott Presti secured the prime spot on the grid with a lap of 1:06.553 for an average speed of 88.71 mph around the infield road course. As is the norm, competition was extremely intense as 15 of the 18 entrants were covered by one second. Putnam Park race winner Anthony Simone will start alongside Presti for Saturday’s race while row two will see Tophie Stewart on the inside and Kevin Christensen on the outside. Championship leader Bryan Sellers was fifth, half a second slower than Presti.
The second qualifying session took place in relatively cooler conditions since track temperatures fell into the mid-90’s. That certainly aided Anthony Simone in establishing a qualifying track record. His fast lap stopped the clock in 1:06.262 (89.10 mph). Simone will be looking to narrow the gap to Sellers in the championship chase as well as keep the momentum rolling that saw him take two wins at rounds 7 and 8. Christian Symczak was two-tenths of a second off of Simone’s pace but still fast enough to take the second front row spot. Damian Della-Santina also stepped up his performance to secure the third starting position with Daniel Dileo alongside. Bryan Sellers has a lock on the fifth spot on the grid.
