Trebing and Serralles Take Home Wins

Lakeville, Conn. (August 23). The 2010 season of the BF Goodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda is quickly winding down, but the competition is still incredibly strong. This weekend at Road America, twenty drivers took to the field and battled it out, hoping to get extra championship points to gain position.

Going into this weekend, Spencer Pigot held the championship lead with Isaac Lyons close behind. Felix Serralles, Ashley Freiberg and Dennis Trebing were all tied for third, and each eager to gain an advantage.

Round 11

On your typical Skip Barber National race weekend, when drivers are getting ready to grid, there's always some kind of tension in the air. That would be an understatement for race one of the weekend. Nerves were at an all time high, and even one of the racer's parents remarked how suddenly serious everything had become.

Despite the nerves, the National group put on another great show. Peter Ludwig brought the field to green, and he, along with Felix Serralles, Dennis Trebing and Ashley Freiberg went four wide into turn one. Trebing came through the corner with the lead, but Ludwig quickly reclaimed first position.

In lap three, Freiberg and Isaac Lyons had contact, and due to car damage, Freiberg was unable to continue. Ludwig lead into lap three with Luigi Biangardi and Serralles in tow, side-by-side. Down the front straight, Trebing, Ludwig and Biangardi were three wide for the lead, and once the pack made it to Canada Corner, Spencer Pigot gained the lead. Biangardi lead the field to the white flag, followed by Trebing, Serralles, Pigot and Scott Anderson.

Trebing took home his third win of the season, and Spencer Pigot and Isaac Lyons completed the podium. Close behind were Felix Serralles, Scott Anderson and Brandon Newey. Luigi Biangardi drove an impressive race, finishing seventh in his first Skip Barber National race weekend, never leaving the top ten.

Round 12

Qualifying for race two of the weekend was cut short due to an off-course excursion which was followed by two unrelated local yellows with just four minutes left in the session. Several drivers put down fast times but it was Irishman Isaac Lyons who grabbed the California Scents Pole Position and a championship point. The previous day's race winner and Florida native Dennis Trebing started second and points leader and MAZDASPEED Scholarship driver Spencer Pigot started fifth. The tension at the start of this race was nowhere near as strong as the day before, but drivers were still quiet and focused as they went to grid.

As they crossed the start, Lyons lead down the front straight, but Brandon Newey, starting fourth and working the draft, grabbed the lead in turn one. In for Formula Skip Barber cars, Road America is always a race game of musical chairs. Newey and Lyons exchanged the lead several times before Spencer Pigot grabbed the lead for laps three and four. Felix Serralles kept a strong presence at the front of the field and also took the lead at the halfway point.

Going three wide through turn after turn, Pigot, Lyons, Serralles, Newey, Trebing and Ashley Freiberg distanced themselves from the rest of the field. For the entirety of the race, drivers were racing hard but still giving each other room.

With ten minutes to go, Nick Andries grabbed the lead, but the draft shuffled him back to fourth as Lyons became the new leader. Freiberg and Pigot were close in tow, battling for second. Pigot gained the position and Freiberg went side-by-side with Andries for third.

While the battle raged amongst the leaders, Newey used the draft to take the lead in the second to last lap. Unfortunately, Newey had contact shortly after and finished a lap down. Felix Serralles took home his second win of the season and Isaac Lyons and Spencer Pigot completed the podium. Behind the leaders, Luigi Biangardi, who started second, raced hard and consistent, always staying in the top eight, and crossed the line with an impressive fourth place finish.
