Ricky Taylor Captures Second Victory In Skip Barber Southern Regional Series
Altamonte Springs, Fla. (January 11, 2005) -- Ricky Taylor captured his second victory of the season in last weekend's competition at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the Skip Barber Southern Regional Series winter edition. Following a victory in the Race Two of the weekend and a fourth-place finish in the first race, Taylor currently sits in third place in the championship point's standings in the popular winter series.
"It's great to get another win," said the 16 year-old Taylor, son of endurance racing champion Wayne Taylor. "I learned a lot about race craft in the first race and I applied what I learned into winning the second race."
In Saturday's action, Taylor originally qualified second-fastest after posting a 1:32.215, but was awarded the pole because the Andrew Carbonell's qualifying effort was penalized for running off the track after posting a time of 1:32.023, a mere 0.192 faster than Taylor's time. After starting on the pole in Race One, Taylor held the lead for three laps, but was then passed by Duncan Ende on the front straightaway.JTaylor slipped back to third and over the next few laps fought his way back to first then down again as a group of drivers jockeyed for position at the front. In the final lap of the race, the budding driver set a track record with a 1:31.781 time, and claimed only fourth place after being inched out of third by just five-thousandths of a second.
On Sunday, Taylor began the race from the fourth position and immediately jumped to third during the first few seconds. He moved up to second position on lap three, and then fell back to third in a heated dogfight. After battling with Michel Garrido and Andre Villareal, Taylor briefly peeked into the lead for part of one lap before falling back to third, but quickly moved back to second on lap 12. He then leaped past Villareal to claim first place on lap 14, a position Taylor never relinquished as he took the checkered flag and the race victory."The Skip Barber races have been great experience for me to drive under extremely competitive race conditions with so many good drivers," said Ricky, a resident of Altamonte Springs, Fla. "I'm having a great time and learning a lot."
This was Taylor's third of six race weekends in the Skip Barber Southern Regional Series winter edition. Through six races, Taylor has recorded two wins, three pole positions and three podium finishes. His sponsors for the series include Sonny's BBQ, Arai Helmets, OMP and Now and Later.
While Ricky is coming off success in Southern Florida, his father, Wayne, is ready for potential repeat success in Daytona Beach, Fla. as he prepares to defend his 2005 Rolex 24 At Daytona victory in the No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley Mk.XI. Taylor and co-drivers Max Angelelli, Emmanuel Collard and Ryan Briscoe tested their No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac over the weekend at Daytona. Taylor and Angelelli brought their race car to five victories in 2005 as they became the winningest Daytona Prototype team in Grand American history with eight victories in just two seasons and claimed the 2005 Grand American Rolex Series Daytona Prototype Team and Driver Championships.
The Skip Barber Southern Regional Series features identical 2.0-liter Dodge R/T 2000 cars. The next race is February 18-19 at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Fla.
