Two-time Stanley Cup winning goaltender Chris Osgood of the Detroit Red Wings, gave the call to the Barber Dodge Pro Series Drivers to start their engines this past weekend at the Tenneco Automotive Detroit Grand Prix.

It was Osgood's first visit to a major motor race, and in addition to giving the start call, had an up close visit with a Barber Dodge Reynard. Jeff Morton's number 16 Vitamin Outlet Barber Dodge Reynard provided a view that was surely quite different than the one Osgood is accustomed to seeing from behind the goalie mask. Morton was alongside explaining all of the intricacies of his racer including the workings of the six-speed sequential gearbox and in the cockpit adjustable brake bias and roll bar. Morton's car number was selected in honor of Red Wing Player Vladomir Konstantinov who was paralyzed in an automobile accident following their 1998 Stanley Cup victory.

Does Osgood have any interest trading the goalie pads and glove for a helmet and nomex race suit?

"No, thanks. I'd rather stop pucks flying at me at 100 mph. I think it's safer," he said.

The rest of us aren't so sure.
