Imrie takes a fourth-place at Mont-Tremblant.
August 08, 2002 (Toronto, Ontario): Ward Imrie finished fourth and thirteenth in a pair of Formula Dodge races last weekend at Le Circuit de Mont-Tremblant in Quebec. Despite the thirteenth-place finish, caused when he was hit from behind and knocked off the track, Imrie retains fifth place in the 'Formula Dodge National Championship presented by Racer'.
Imrie's stint at Mont-Tremblant did not begin smoothly as he had a hard time in practice, struggling with handling difficulties on the 4.274-km (2.656-mile), fifteen-turn track. However, the nineteen-year-old from Winnipeg, Manitoba, worked closely with mechanics throughout the weekend to bring the car more to his liking. He qualified eighth for the first race of the event, held on Saturday, and tenth for race two on Sunday.
In race one, Imrie got an excellent start, gaining two positions, and held sixth in the opening laps. As the fourteen-lap race neared the half-way point, Imrie looked feisty and was eyeing fifth place when he was hit from behind by Steve Welk. Imrie, Welk and another driver went spinning off the track. While Welk was unable to continue, the others scrambled back on to the track and get back into the race. Imrie had lost a lot of ground, but he got straight to work and fought his way past several cars to finish thirteenth in a field of twenty.
"The handling wasn't quite what I wanted, but I still think I could have had a top-five on Saturday," Imrie said. "I was a bit upset about the crash because I got three points for finishing thirteenth, but I know I deserved a lot more than that."
On Sunday, Imrie asked for more changes to the set up of his car. Mechanics adjusted the tire pressures and ride height of the machine, making it more suited to Imrie's taste. He drove a clean, but aggressive race, elevating himself form tenth to fourth after a terrific battle with Scott Poirier in the final laps. They traded places back and forth, but Imrie got the better of Poirier on the last lap and hung on until he crossed the finish line.
"Things were much better today," said Imrie, a former kart racer who is competing in Formula Dodge thanks to a Barber-CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) Karting Scholarship. "The points I got today are very important for my standing in the championship. There are just four races left and I want to get third in the championship. I have a mathematical shot at the title, but it's unrealistic for me to aim for that because the guys in first and second would have to completely mess up every race from here on. I'll be out there doing my best and trying to get enough points to take third."
Imrie's next event is August 22-24 when two races will be held at California Speedway. The season will close with another doubleheader event at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut, October 11-13.
