WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (June 26,) - The morning Barber Dodge practice session at Watkins Glen (short course) was solid rain, and quickest was Californian Jon Fogarty at 1:31.899. Nicolas Rondet was the only other driver in the :31s, followed by Todd Snyder, Jeff Simmons and Samer Hindi.
The second session was dry, on a very green race track, where Rino Mastronardi, the defending race winner, turned a 1:16.470 (115.339 mph) to lead the way. Giovanni Anapoli, recovering the form he showed at the season-opener in Sebring, was second at 1:16.493. Alex Gurney, the very green (all puns intended) youngest son of Dan, was third fastest at 1:16.499. His private Team Green coach, Bob Earl, admitted that this was the first track that Alex is comfortable at, and it's showing. Detroit winner Jeff Simmons was fourth, and Rocky Moran, Jr., fifth.
All told, the first 20 drivers were within one second on the Glen's fast 2.45-mile short course.
Practice session times for the Barber Dodge Pro Series, supporting the Lysol 200 NASCAR Busch Grand National event. Track: 2.45 miles, 7 turns, plus chicane. All cars identical Reynard Dodge V6, open-wheel, single-seat race cars. Conditions: Warm, humid, sunny, green track, new tires.
