Scheckter new Open Telefonica Scheckter leader

Montagny misses victory in first round due to engine failure

Circuito de Valencia, 10 June 2001.- Tomas Scheckter (Vergani Racing) and Franck Montagny (Epsilon by Graff) where both winners this morning, but Scheckter took a little advantage of Montagny's engine failure occurred 3 laps after the Race 1 started.The 20 year old son of Jody Scheckter is the new leader of the Series and Team Manager Francesco Marzi is happy to arrive at Monza under this conditions.

With Francky out of the race, the fisrt round was a beautiful fight including Tomas Scheckter, Andrea Belicchi (SITEC Motorsport), and an impressive Rafael Sarandeses (Adrian Campos Motorsport), who started from the second row of the grid and suddenly took the aspiration of Scheckter. Finally Belicchi overtook him and the second position was denied to the young Spaniard. The Italian registered the fastest lap: "It's been a hard race till the end. The SITEC team needed this points so badly and we will fight in order to get them. Obviously Monza is a very important track in order to take an advantage. I'm so glad to race there in the mid of July."

Franck Montagny (Epsilon by Graff) had in general a bad week-end. He declared to have problems since Friday, in the Qualifying, and the engine failure was on top of that. Nevertheless, he had no rival in the second round, where he was the winner and he took the pole. "First of all, Thank you Michel (Lecomte), Thanks to the Team because they did an effort to get my car in the grid for the second race. With fresh tyres and new engine my start was OK. Obviously I was very worried about the starting procedure, as Y have a very bad memory from Albacete (He took a stop and go because he was said to advance the start)".

Five drivers could non finish Race 1. Gregoire De Galzain (Epsilon by Graff) was the star of the main accident, involving unintentionally the Young Italian Mateo Bobbi, who has been through a real nightmare since the Meeting started last Friday. Coraggio!

During the second race, Geoffrey Dellus (Epsilon by Graff) did his best races so far. 6th in Race 1, he started the second round from the fifth position, and he overtook until the third position. When the Pit Stops begun, he kept a strong second position behind Montagny. He was able to keep Scheckter behind, until the pump fuel broke up. Manuel Giao was involved in two race incidents and had a lot of mechanical problems with the gear power. The Repsol driver Angel Burgueño was third in this second race and he made the pole of the race in the first race.

The next race of the Open Telefonica will take place in the Car Racing Cathedral, the Autodromo di Monza (GP Track) , the next 15th of July.
