Two Fran-Am races at Air Canada Grand Prix in Montreal.

Montreal, Canada, April 11, 2003 -- It was officially announced earlier this week that races of both the Fran-Am Sport 2000 and Fran-Am Sport 1600 Series will be staged at the 2003 Formula 1 Air Canada Grand Prix next June.

The Air Canada Grand Prix -- one of the two prestigious Formula 1 Grands Prix to be held in North America this year -- will host two distinct Fran-Am Sport races, June 13-15, 2003 on the 2.71-mile (4,361-km) long Gilles Villeneuve Circuit located on Ile Notre-Dame, a stone throw from downtown Montreal. It is expected that an impressive crowd of several hundreds of thousands of spectators will watch the two Fran-Am races during the three days of the event. These two development series are designed to showcase the talent of the most talented young road racers who have the ambition of making it into Formula 1 and ChampCar racing.

The Fran-Am 2000 race will represent Round 3 of the Fran-Am Sport 2000 North American Pro Championship Series. This series is made of 13 rounds held in conjunction with major North American road racing events such as the F1 Air Canada Grand Prix in Montreal, the Denver ChampCar event, the Mexico ChampCar race and the three Canadian Molson Indys. The Fran-Am 2000 open wheel car features a spec-Tatuus carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, a sealed 2.0-liter/186-horsepower four cylinder engine, front and rear wings, a six-speed sequential gearbox and spec-Michelin Sport slick racing tires.

The Fran-Am 1600 race held in Montreal -- called the Canadian Open World Championship - will be a non-championship even opened to all participants who are competing in the Fran-Am 1600 USA East Pro Championship, Fran-Am 1600 USA West Pro Championship, as well as the three Canadian Regional Fran-Am 1600 Championships. The Fran-Am 1600 series feature winged, 1600cc-powered single-seaters running on spec Michelin Sport racing slicks. The Fran-Am 1600 regional series act as bridges between karting and the Fran-Am 2000 championships.

Each Fran-Am 2000 North American Pro race features a U.S. $28,500 Michelin International supported cash prize fund, with the overall series champion winning a fully paid ride in the new Euro Cup Renault V-6 series in Europe. The second and third place finishers in the final standings will also be awarded with free races in the Euro Cup Formula Renault V-6 series. The Fran-Am 2000 Series is a cousin of the internationally acclaimed Formula Renault. Recent Formula Renault graduates include McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen, Williams' Juan Pablo Montoya and Toyota's Olivier Panis -- all F1 Grand Prix winners - as well as ChampCar drivers Sebastien Bourdais and Oriol Servia.
