Last Throw Of The Dice At Vodacom Roadshow Meeting
The Vodacom Roadshow meeting at Zwartkops, near Pretoria West, on Saturday could be a last throw of the dice for contenders in national and non-championship categories.
Vodacom Sports Prototypes, Vodacom Isondo 2000, Formula GTi and Formula Vee share the stage with a host of regional and club categories. It will be a jam-packed programme for motorsport enthusiasts, but for championship contenders in the national categories the end of the season draws nigh, and a couple of championship issues are still in a state of flux.
Kempton Park driver George Ferreira has been the outstanding driver in the Vodacom Sports Prototype category this season, and has edged clear of closest rival Alan Eve. The gap between the pair is now 34 points, and Ferreira would look to be sitting pretty.
Chasing after Eve are Midrand pair Niel Lobb and Clive Kennerley. Lobb is only 15 points adrift of Eve, with Kennerley too far back to be a major threat at this stage. Ferreira will start the obvious favourite, and could put the issue beyond doubt this weekend.
On the GTi front Midrand youngster Dale Knez has edged away from Barry Ingle, another Midrand resident, but is far from out of the woods. Ingle has a nine point deficit to make up, and there is plenty of pressure on Knez.
The da Cunha brothers from Middelburg, Marco and Paolo, along with Pretoria driver Miguel Rocha have dropped off the pace a little in the champion. All three, however, are potential winners and could give Knez and Ingle trouble.
Another Pretoria driver, Lee Thompson, has a little breathing space in a Formula Vee battle that has raged all season. Thompson is now 10 points clear of Trevor Smith, with Welkom veteran Dennis Johns not yet out of the picture, and the Formula Vee brigade could provide the best racing of the day.
Chad Francis has a commanding lead in the Vodacom Isondo Sports 2000 series, and is 40 points clear of Gugu Zulu who has concentrated on the Wesbank V8 Championship where he is a team-mate of Sarel van der Merwe in the Sasol Ford camp.
Latest championship positions:
Vodacom Sports Prototypes: 1 G Ferreira 251; 2 A Eve 217; 3 N Lobb 202; 4 C Kennerley 166; 5 B Tilanus 150.
Formula GTi: 1 D Knez 65; 2 B Ingle 56; 3 M da Cunha 42; 4 M Rocha 33; 5 P da Cunha 15.
Formula Vee: 1 L Thompson 163; 2 T Smith 153; 3 D Johns 149; 4 D Murphy 138; 5 S Grobler 93.
Vodacom Isondo Sports 2000: 1 C Francis 84; 2 G Zulu 44; 3 S Mosley 30; 4 R Jaffer 23; 5 Z Zakhele 17.
