ONE ALL AS PORSCHE HONOURS GOES DOWN TO THE WIRE
Porsche racing veteran Jim Richards equaled the ledger in race two of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide today, edging out race one winner Fabian Coulthard.
The 18-lap race which followed race one of the V8 Supercars saw Richards (OAMPS Insurance Brokers) take the ascendancy from the start in a reversal of yesterday's race progression.
A more dramatic race also included two Wright Patton Shakespeare Safety Car periods following mid-field incidents on laps two and seven.
An exciting front-end battle continued to be staged between Richards, Coulthard (Glenfords Tool Centres / Makita) and also Team VIP Petfoods gun Luke Youlden.
Coulthard snuck under Richards' guard mid-race, before the seven-time Bathurst 1000 champion hit back a few turns later. Youlden was lurking close behind the two combatants ahead waiting for an opportunity, which unfortunately for the 27-year-old never occurred.
The first incident which brought out the Wright Patton Shakespeare Safety Car included Peter Fitzgerald (Acer / Abcor), Marc Cini (ADAMCO) and Theo Koundouris (Dare Shots), with the latter sustaining too much damage to continue.
The second incident ended the day for Tony Quinn (Team VIP Petfoods), Paul Freestone (Freestone's Transport) and Shane McKillen (42 Below). At the time of writing, both incidents were being reviewed by race officials.
At the re-start after the second Wright Patton Shakespeare Safety Car period, Richards slowed the field down before hitting the throttle and putting a handy gap between his Porsche and Coulthard's machine.
The win to Richards sets the scene for a crucial race three tomorrow to see who will take the round one honours.
Youlden crossed the line third for today with team mate Klark Quinn putting in another impressive performance for fourth keeping rival Alan Gurr (Glenfords Tool Centres / Hitachi) at bay.
Back in the field Sydney driver Ash Samadi finished 16th, but it was the preparation of his Globe Racing team that has become one of the great stories to come out of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup this week.
While many people see the exploits of the driver in attaining a result, the unsung heroes are often the support team especially in moments of major mechanical repair.
In one of the spectacular moments of the Grand Prix two weeks ago, Samadi sustained major panel damage to his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car after a double flip left his team with much work to do to get the car ready for the Clipsal 500.
The car required a major panel overhaul, straightening of the chassis and replacement of the right hand rear suspension. But the job was completed with limited time to spare and after a few sleepless nights.
Samadi's Porsche arrived in Sydney on the Monday after the Grand Prix and was completely stripped down. Parts were ordered on Tuesday morning and it was towed to the panel shop, where every panel except the bonnet and two sills were replaced.
The car returned to the workshop on Saturday morning, tested early Monday morning and then hoisted into the truck for Adelaide at 9am on Monday.
Persian-born Samadi who came to Australia at 18 entered motorsport in 2002, competing in the MG Series for two seasons and also the 2003 Bathurst 24 Hour where he placed second in his class.
After starting in the Carrera Cup last year, Samadi has recorded a best round result of 14th and race result of 11th -- statistics he hopes to better by the end of this weekend's opening round.
Race three of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup over 12 laps will be staged tomorrow at 9.40am, before the V8 Supercar Championship Series race two at 2.00pm.
The Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup is the most successful 'one make' championship in the world, and is the primary support category to the V8 Supercar Championship Series in Australia.
All cars in the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup are developed and built by Porsche' racing arm in Weissach, Germany. With a top speed in excess of 300 kilometres per hour, the lightweight, high performance vehicles have a 400 horsepower, 6 cylinder Boxer engine which revs to 8000 RPM, producing a sound that is distinctly Porsche.
