GOLD COAST TRIFECTA FOR KIWI PORSCHE STAR
There are not too many similarities between New Zealand and the Gold Coast, but for Kiwi Fabian Coulthard, Queensland's tourism capital will be a place to remember.
The 23-year-old Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup star completed a hat trick of race wins at the Lexmark Indy 300 today -- the first time the 2005 series leader has won all three races at a round.
Coulthard (Glenfords Tool Centres / Makita) won race three this morning to wrap up the round victory in this eighth stop of the nine-round Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup championship.
He now has extended his championship lead to 162 points over inaugural 2003 series champion Jim Richards (OAMPS Insurance Brokers) who had to withdraw from races two and three this weekend with engine problems.
Today's seven-lap race saw Coulthard post a comfortable win over fellow rising stars of the track Klark Quinn (Team VIP Petfoods) from the Gold Coast and Ian Dyk (Glenfords Tool Centres / DeWalt / AEG) from Sydney. Cameron McLean (Sherrin Racing) had a great tussle with Jonathon Webb (Tekno Autosport / Yachting Unlimited) for fourth with the more experienced racer in McLean taking the spoils.
Gold Coast-based Kiwi James Cressey (Zarraffas Coffee) finished sixth ahead of Luke Youlden (Team VIP Petfoods).
It was a disappointing end to the round for Adelaide gun Bryce Washington (ADRAD Radiators) and Paul Freestone (Freestone's Transport). The two, who were both enjoying their best-ever round after two races, engaged in a lap two incident which sent Washington into a spin and out of the race and a drive-through penalty for Freestone.
In glorious Gold Coast sunshine, Coulthard accepted the round trophy at the podium presentation -- the sixth time out of the eight rounds that he has stood on the top step of the podium this year.
Local star Quinn pulled off his best ever round finish of second in the all-Porsche championship while the youngest driver in the field Dyk, 20, scored his maiden podium finish in his rookie year.
McLean catapulted up to fourth after his race three result to finish ahead of Washington and Freestone. Despite his race three DNF, Washington equaled his best ever round performance and Freestone also managed a personal best despite his race three drama.
With one round to go in the 2005 Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup, Coulthard tops the standings on 1125 points with Richards in second on 963 points. Youlden holds onto third on 743 points, only 3 points ahead of Webb.
Melbourne driver Dean Grant won the TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge for the round for the highest scoring privateer driver over 35 years in a 2003-spec Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. Grant (Aqua Max Water Heaters) finished ahead of the Koundouris brothers, James and Theo, both backed by Supabarn Supermarkets and Dare Shots.
In the overall standings in the TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge, Grant holds a 186-point margin over Tony Quinn (Team VIP Petfoods), 1104 to 918, and has secured his second consecutive TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph. With 180 points up for grabs at the final round, Grant cannot be overtaken by Quinn. Theo Koundouris holds onto third with Marc Cini (Hallmarc) still in sight of the third-placed Chronograph.
The next and final round of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup is scheduled for Phillip Island in Victoria from November 25 to 27.
The Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup is the most successful 'one make' championship in the world, and is the primary support category to the V8 Supercar Championship Series in Australia.
All cars in the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup are developed and built by Porsche' racing arm in Weissach, Germany. With a top speed in excess of 300 kilometres per hour, the lightweight, high performance vehicles have a 400 horsepower, 6 cylinder Boxer engine which revs to 8000 RPM, producing a sound that is distinctly Porsche.
