Davison Makes it Three Out of Three in Darwin

Alex Davison, Jim Richards and Fabian Coulthard made it a treble of trifectas today in the Australian Carrera Cup at Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin.

Davison, the ultra talented Greg Murphy Racing driver supported by Glenfords Tool Centres, won both 15-lap races on the card today to complete the Carrera Cup victory treble in round three of the all-Porsche series in Australia's 'Top End'.

In all three races (race one yesterday), the 24-year-old Davison got the better start over Richards (Jim Richards Racing / OAMPS Insurance Brokers) and was never headed. In the stifling Darwin conditions, it was a credit to Davison's concentration that he set the fastest race lap over the weekend of 1:10.9771 in race three.

"This was my first time to Darwin so I couldn't really ask for more," said Davison. "The car was fantastic, and it was nice to be able to get away in the races and conserve the tyres."

Davison's team mate Coulthard took the challenge up to Richards for second place early in race three, and attempted a daring passing manoeuvre which was more optimistic than realistic. Richards managed to hold the 21-year-old Team Braun driver at bay for the remainder of the race to consolidate second place for the round.

"If we couldn't win, then the next best place is second, especially when there is some good clean racing," said Richards. "It was a great result for Fabian who continues to improve with every race. I knew he wasn't going to get by into the corner in race three, and then we managed to pull away a bit and come home second."

After three rounds of the Australian Carrera Cup, Davison has increased his lead to 51 points over Richards with another 75 points back to Couthard in third.

"I am gradually bridging the gap in races between myself and Alex and Jim, and it's all coming down to racing experience," said Coulthard. "Hopefully we can keep the momentum going in Perth in three weeks time, and get even closer or even past."

Sydney youngster Jonathon Webb put in his best performance of 2004 with a fourth placing for the round, after finishing fourth in race two and fifth in race three. Webb (Tekno Autosports) had a good tussle with former Hidden Valley race winner Kevin Bell (International Motorsport NZ / G-Tech NZ) over the weekend, with the spoils going to Webb in two out of the three races.

Having his first Carrera Cup hit out for 2004, Bell ended up fifth for the round, just ahead of International Motorsport New Zealand team mate Paul Pedersen and Peter Fitzgerald (Fitzgerald Racing / Abcor, Acer).

In other Carrera Cup award categories this year, Coulthard leads the Michelin Porsche Driver to Europe (for drivers under 30 years yet to drive in a European Porsche series), and is equal leader with James Cressey (Team VIP Petfoods) in the Michelin Rookie of the Year stakes (for drivers in their first season of Porsche racing). Dean Grant (Team Becks) heads Stephen Borness (Celerity Racing / LogiAdd) in the Carrera Cup Challenge (for drivers 35 years or over in a 2003-spec 911 GT3 Cup car), while Borness maintains his lead in the Fuchs Hard Charger award (for the driver who passes the most cars).

'Trackside' on Network Ten will telecast round three of the Carrera Cup on Sunday May 30 at 2pm (check local guides).

The Australian Carrera Cup now moves to Western Australia for round four at Barbagallo Raceway near Perth from June 11 to 13.

The Carrera Cup is the most successful 'one make' championship in the world with the close-to-identical Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars built by Porsche' racing arm in Weissach, Germany. All cars have a top speed in excess of 300 kilometres per hour with a 400-horsepower, 6 cylinder Boxer engine which revs to 8000 RPM.
