PORSCHES ON FIRE AT ORAN PARK

Glenfords Racing was 'on fire' today in round four of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup at Oran Park in Sydney, with Alex Davison smoking to an important race win while team mate Jonathon Webb's fortunes went up in flames.

Davison (Glenfords Tool Centres / DeWalt) scorched around the 2.7km Oran Park circuit setting new Porsche lap records in qualifying (1:08.3360) and then race one (1:09.9593) to put his championship aspirations back on track.

The 26-year-old former series champion had another exciting tussle with current series leader Craig Baird (Team VIP Petfoods) before setting the track alight and recording his third race win of the season over the 16-lap journey.

Davison relinquished the lead to his Gold Coast-based Kiwi rival on the second lap after some opening corner drama ended the hopes of three Porsche entries -- Paul Freestone (Star Track Express), Bryce Washington (ADRAD Radiators) and Anthony Tratt (Toll).

Then things really heated up when last year's third ranked driver Webb (Glenfords Tool Centres / Makita) had to abort his machine on lap two after flames engulfed the engine bay at the rear of the car caused by a broken fuel line.

The 22-year-old started from the front row of the grid before getting too much wheel spin on the start and dropping back to fifth place when the fire started.

After the safety car emerged to clear the track of the damaged vehicles, Davison made his move on Baird on lap seven at the final turn onto the home straight before powering away over the second half of the race to claim the race one win.

Baird held on for second ahead of Sonic Motor Racing's David Reynolds (Bob Jane T-Marts) with Juniper Racing's Ian Dyk finishing fourth after an encouraging performance at the front of the field.

A name familiar to the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup, Luke Youlden, returned to the Porsche racing fray today substituting for an ill Peter Fitzgerald in the Acer, Hitachi Data Systems and Leading Solutions-backed entry.

Youlden put a smile on his boss' face with a credible fifth place finish ahead of fellow young guns Dean Fiore (Landscape Developments), David Russell (Boom Logistics / Sherrin Hire) and David Wall (Glenfords Tool Centres / Hitachi).

Inaugural series champion Jim Richards (OAMPS Insurance Brokers) finished in the unfamiliar position of ninth with last year's Australian Formula 3 champion Aaron Caratti rounding out the top 10.

Davison's race win today moved him back into second spot in the standings ahead of Richards but still 137 points behind Baird.

"It was definitely a mixed bag for the team today," said Davison. "I really feel for Webby, especially after we both got such a good start to the day in qualifying with both cars on the front row.

"I was pretty happy with my performance despite letting Baird get past me on the opening lap. The car was great and we set some really good lap times. I was actually surprised that Baird left the door open for me to get past, so I have to thank him for that, because he rarely does it.

"We'll keep chipping away at the point's lead and hope that he has a couple of bad races along the way."

Round four of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup at Oran Park will conclude tomorrow with Race 2 over 16 laps at 9.25am and Race 3 over 16 laps at 2.40pm.
