COULTHARD TAKES QUEENSLAND SPOILS
Fabian Coulthard reclaimed the championship lead in the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup by winning round four of the series at Queensland Raceway today.
The Glenfords Tool Centres and Makita backed 22-year-old won both 14-lap races today from last year's Formula Ford champion David Reynolds and ex-series leader Jim Richards.
It could have been classed as a trifecta of race wins for the New Zealand-born Coulthard this weekend after he crossed the line first in yesterday's race one.
However last night officials deemed the result a 'No Race' as 75 percent of the race distance was not completed. The race was shortened from the original 14 laps to eight laps following Cameron McLean's major accident on lap two.
Today Coulthard continued from where he left off yesterday with the two race wins over Reynolds (Bob Jane T-Marts) who has made up considerable places in the championship and Richards (OAMPS Insurance Brokers) who now moves back to second.
After four rounds of the nine round Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup in 2005, Coulthard leads on 537 points, only six ahead of Richards, with Jonathon Webb consolidating third position on 450 points despite a sixth place finish for the round.
In race two this morning, Luke Youlden moved into second position after the first lap behind Coulthard but damaged a rear guard during his progress which began to cut into his rear left tyre. Entering turn one on lap two, Youlden's (Team VIP Petfoods) tyre gave way sending him into the sand bringing out the Safety Car.
Dean Grant (Aqua-Max Water Heaters) also ended his race on this lap, bringing his record of 61 race finishes from 61 starts in the category to an end.
When the race returned to green flag conditions on lap six, Coulthard led Reynolds, Peter Fitzgerald (Acer/Abcor) and Richards. The 2003 series champion Richards made his move on Fitzgerald quickly and engaged in a close fight with Coulthard and Reynolds for the top three spots.
In a closely contested final few laps the positions remained the same and set the scene for a crucial third race a few hours later.
A clean start saw Coulthard off the line strongly with Reynolds tucking in behind at turn one, followed by Fitzgerald and Richards.
On lap nine, the Safety Car emerged after a big shunt into the tyre barriers from James Cressey (Zarraffas Coffee) after contact by Youlden who was making up numerous positions after starting from rear of grid. Youlden was later given a drive-through penalty for the infringement sending him to the back of the field once again.
The race went back to green with two laps to go and Coulthard managed to keep 20-year-old Reynolds at bay with Richards only a fraction of a second behind those two.
After the two races, Coulthard was awarded the round win, his third this season while Reynolds achieved his second podium finish in a row with a second placing. Richards finished third for the round ahead of Fitzgerald and Rodney Jane who added to a great weekend for the Bob Jane T-Marts-backed Sonic Motorsport team.
In the TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge for amateur drivers aged over 35 years in a 2003-spec Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, Tony Quinn (Team VIP Petfoods) won the round from Theo Koundouris (Dare Shots) and Ash Samadi (Globe Racing). Quinn has now moved into the lead in the race for the TAG Heuer Chronograph from Grant, who suffered through a DNF in race two today.
Round five of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup is scheduled for Oran Park from August 12 to 14. Trackside on Network Ten will telecast the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup at Queensland Raceway on Sunday July 31 from 2pm.
The Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup is the most successful 'one make' championship in the world, and is the primary support category to the V8 Supercar Championship Series in Australia.
All cars in the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup are developed and built by Porsche's racing arm in Weissach, Germany. With a top speed in excess of 300 kilometres per hour, the lightweight, high performance vehicles have a 400 horsepower, 6 cylinder Boxer engine which revs to 8000 RPM, producing a sound that is distinctly Porsche.
