REYNOLDS GIVES DAD A GREAT FATHER'S DAY GIFT
Rising Porsche star David Reynolds gave his father John a great Father's Day present by winning round five of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup at the Betta Electrical 500 at Sandown in Melbourne today.
Reynolds, 21, secured his first round win in the all-Porsche category as well as the maiden round victory for his team Sonic Motor Racing.
The Albury born-and-bred driver won an exciting 14-lap race three this morning to claim the round spoils on Father's Day.
After returning to the paddock for the podium presentation, Reynolds supported by Bob Jane T-Marts stepped out of his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car to greet his father with "Happy Father's Day dad".
"I'm now living in Melbourne so it was great to do this with many of my family and friends here," said Reynolds.
"I've been quick all season but just haven't been able to convert that speed to race or round wins, until now.
"It must be my favourite circuit, as my previous round win was here in 2004 in the final round of the Australian Formula Ford championship -- the season I won that championship.
"The Sonic team did a great job once again, and all three cars were right up there. We've now got to continue this at Bathurst and hopefully consolidate a place in the top three."
Reynolds got a great start off the front row of the grid in race three this morning to lead Craig Baird (Team VIP Petfoods) and Sonic team mate Dean Fiore (Landscape Developments) to the first turn.
Then the re-shuffle began. Fiore fought his way past Reynolds on the next turn, and in doing so, some slight contact sent Reynolds slightly askew allowing Jonathon Webb (Glenfords Tool Centres/Makita) and Baird through as well.
Podium hopefuls Luke Youlden (Acer/Leading Solutions/Hitachi Data Systems) and David Russell (Boom Logistics/Sherrin Hire) both had their round chances shattered early on. Youlden had a spin on the first lap while Russell went off the track with a punctured left rear tyre on lap four.
With six laps to go, both Baird and Reynolds passed Webb in what was a great four-way dice for the lead including the pacesetter Fiore. At that stage, Baird's placing had him in the round podium position from Reynolds and Fiore but all that was about to change with just over two laps to go.
On the final turn coming onto the main straight, Baird ran wide gifting Reynolds the lead and also providing a path through for Webb and Fiore to overtake him. Alex Davison (Glenfords Tool Centres/DeWalt) made up a solid four positions by this point to be placed fifth.
The positions stayed the same through to the checkered flag with Reynolds claiming his first race win for 2006 and round win in the category.
Baird placed second overall for the round ahead of Davison, Fiore, Webb, Youlden and Russell.
The Team VIP Petfoods lead pilot maintained his lead in the championship with 852 points, a substantial 176 points ahead of Davison, with Reynolds moving into third another 109 points back.
It was a great round for the Sonic Motor Racing squad with Rodney Jane (Bob Jane T-Marts) taking out the TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge for privateer drivers over 30 years of age.
Jane completed a clean sweep of wins in this award category for the second round in succession to build a healthy lead in the overall standings.
In other award categories, Russell leads the Michelin Rookie of the Year overall standings while Tony Quinn (Team VIP Petfoods) was the Mobil1 Hard Charger for the round for making up the most number of grid positions.
Round six of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup is next on the calendar (Super Cheap Auto 1000) to be staged at Bathurst from October 5 to 8.
