TEAM VIP PETFOODS BATTLES SETUP CURVEBALL AT HIDDEN VALLEY
Team VIP Petfoods' Craig Baird fought an unexpected battle during today's race one of Hidden Valley's Carrera Cup round three, furiously defending third position against the advances of Dean Fiore and Marcus Marshall.
Although usually one to be in the battle for first, car setup issues with all three Team VIP Petfoods entries threw Baird a curveball in today's first race for the round.
Qualifying third earlier in the day, Baird lined up behind Alex Davison and David Reynolds on the race grid, with Reynolds getting the jump off the line to pull away for the lead he would maintain for the race's entirety.
With Baird focusing on maintaining his top three position against Fiore in the first few laps while dealing with the unargreeable setup, Reynolds and Davison were able to establish a gap over Baird difficult to close under the circumstances.
"My car, along with Tony and Klark's, was just not set up quite right today and we all felt something was off kilter," said Baird.
"However we are confident we can fix the problem ahead of tomorrow's races to come back well and truly on the money and back in the chase."
Although race one may not have gone entirely to plan, Baird's top three finish still has the defending champion at the right end of the field to continue his journey to reclaim his series lead.
"There is still a ways to go with two whole races in which anything can happen, so we just need to keep on pushing," said Baird.
"Hopefully with the setup tweaked I can get back on the pace to hunt down Reynolds and Davison."
Meanwhile, Team VIP Petfoods boss Tony Quinn was reunited with son Klark, who after missing yesterday's practice sessions due to a problem at the family's Queensland VIP Petfoods business, arrived in the 'Top End' in time for this morning's qualifying.
Despite missing out on valuable track time and dealing with similar setup issues as Baird, Klark was able to qualify a still-credible 19th, two positions behind father Tony Quinn in 17th.
From there the dynamic father and son duo fought through hectic middle-pack action, seeing Tony push ahead 6 positions to 11th by the time the chequered flag fell, with Klark following him over the line in 21st.
Tomorrow's final day of Hidden Valley proceedings will see the Team VIP Petfoods' trio line up for the closing races of round three of the Carrera Cup series, with the first of two races kicking off at 10.15am.
