Fitzgerald aims to clean up in 2003 Carrera Cup.
Experienced Porsche pilot signs ENJO as major sponsor for campaign.

Porsche racing expert Peter Fitzgerald is heading into the 2003 Carrera Cup with renewed vigour following the signing of cleaning products company ENJO as major sponsor for the Melbourne-based racer's Porsche GT3 Cup car.

The former Australian Production Car and Bathurst 12 Hour champion is excited about the new series and his new major deal, which sees his #33 ENJO machine now decked in yellow colours, rather than the green and blue that he has carried for the past nine seasons on a variety of Porsche models.

"We were in the very difficult position of needing to raise my entire 2003 budget in a very short time, but with the help of the marketing package that CupCar (the company which runs the Carrera Cup) supplied us, integrated with my own presentation, we were able to go out into the marketplace and use every bit of networking skill we have," said Fitzgerald.

"I owe our survival to many who have pushed the barrow for us, Mr. Hans De Corti from ENJO and Rob Merola of SEW Eurodrive in particular. ENJO has been one of our sponsors for the last two years and, initially, they were only going to be a co-sponsor again this year.

"But Hans attended the Grand Prix debut of the Carrera Cup and was quite excited by what he saw. After we fought back from being taken out in race one and charging from 22nd to ninth in race two and finishing fourth in race three, he decided that they wanted to get further involved."

Fitzgerald said he is looking forward to Phillip Island's opening round, where he believes he will be closer to the front than at the Grand Prix meeting.

"I was not happy with my speed at the Grand Prix but we have had some test time since at Winton and have been happy with our pace there," reported Fitzgerald, whose Fitzgerald Racing Services organisation prepares other cars racing in the Carrera Cup series as well as Porsches in other competition.

"I see our main opposition as JR (Jim Richards), Tim Leahey, Marcus Marshall, Matt Coleman and the ever-improving Jonathon Webb. (Geoff) Morgan will be hampered by no seat time since the GP due to car repairs but I wouldn't discount him and I would also expect Tony Quinn, Scott Shearman and Peter Hill to do a good job.

"As a matter of fact, the more I look at the talent in the field, the more I think it's going to be hard for me to 'clean up'," he added, tongue in cheek.

ENJO is a direct selling company that offers customers an alternative to cleaning with chemicals through the use of ENJO fibre gloves and cloths with water only. Using the method, the use of chemical cleaners can be reduced by as much as 90 percent in the household.

In addition to ENJO, Fitzgerald has gained associate support from SEW Eurodrive, Acer Computers, Van Ek Contracting and Equity One Finance and Investments to add to long-term supporters Cuthberts Prestige Smash, Revolution Racegear and Tyre Torque.

"SEW Eurodrive have been supporters of our Targa Tasmania car for the last few years and have also stepped up to the breach at the last minute," said Fitzgerald.

"They came on-board for the Grand Prix and have now committed for the rest of the season. They offer a broad range of integrated drive solutions for industry, with a vast array of gear motors and electronic motion controls."

Fitzgerald's ENJO Porsche will be one of 26 cars fighting it out in round one of the new Carrera Cup at Phillip Island from April 11-13. There will be three races over the course of the weekend, with the category the main support class to the V8 Supercar Championship Series at a further eight rounds during 2003.
