The series is modelled on the original International Race of Champions series, staged in the USA back in 1973 and 1974.

The original IROC saw a group of Formula 1, IndyCar, NASCAR, and sportscar drivers from the era do battle in identical Porsche 911s, with Mark Donohue winning the final at Daytona.

Australia’s take on the IROC series will also cater for mid-1970s Porsche 911s, with 3.6-litre-powered cars running full slick Hoosier tyres to be eligible.

The cars will even have to be presented in one of the original 15 ‘IROC’ colours used on the custom-built IROC Porsches back in the day.

“The build up to the opening round has been fantastic and we’re happy to be on the grid at Winton,” series founder and administrator Rowan Harman said.

“There has been a lot of talk but we are at the point where we just need to get the cars on the track and show people the product we (think we’re going to) have. That will be the best possible motivation for others to get their cars out of sheds and onto the track.

“We’ve got nine cars that have been purpose-built or converted to the series with six of these running in Round 1, but there are still more cars being constructed. We would like to get to 15-16 cars by the end of our first season.

“The cars look great, sound even better and the racing should be very competitive.”

The series will run on the Shannons Nationals bill, with Sydney Motorsport Park, Phillip Island, Wakefield Park and Mallala all on the 2015 schedule.
